Interesting observation.  Brian Litz of Berger fame has been working on a project that directly relates to your experience.  He heard some anecdotes of rifle-bullet combos that seemed to shoot smaller moa groups at longer distances than they did at 100 yds, (eg. 1 moa @ 100 yds and 1/2 moa at 300 yds). He has not observed this phenomena with his test set up, which consisted of a thin paper target at 100 yds and another target at longer range (300 or so yds).  With the rifle sighted to hit both targets with the same shot (using an offset aiming point, ) he recorded group size etc on both targets.  He hasn't oberved any occasion where the  closer group, measured in terms of moa, was larger than the simultaneous further group.  Interestingly, several shooters came to his range to to recreate the scenario and shot noticeably smaller groups at 100 yds while aiming at the 300 yd target than they could achieve while aiming at the 100 yd target.  This suggests to me that something was going on with shooter psychology or physiology rather than a physics mystery.

You might try setting up a target at 100 yds, and an aim point at 300 with the rifle sighted to hit the 100 yd target, to see if the the groups you get at 100yds jive with the moa you saw earlier.

Hey Yukonal, I have access to  hunting shack near Hettinger ND, and last year I and my buddies set up some steel targets at various ranges.  we shoot pheasants every year, and I set up some targets using my gps last year.  We did not get to shoot since i got sick and we were working on cabin.  Next year … we are going to do some serious shooting!

Anyway, I am going to fix up our “range”  (since I am close like 4 hrs) and get some real world experience on long range shooting.  I will take pics and since North Dakota insists on crazy early application (like june) , I hope to get a tag for a buck.

About 45 minutes from our pheasant hunting location, appears to be a prarie dog range…. I plan to scout the area this summer and hope to find some good towns to set up on.

Sorry no update yet, but I have worked up my excell spreadsheets to set up the basics.

I am a crop consultant (small fruit, including apples) and we are busy right now.  I currently have 2 days at home before i have to go to Minnesota and work with the apple clients.  I am loading my ammo tomorrow to bring with me to  the MN, Detroit Lakes range.  I have my chargmaster full of IMR4166 and I set my Forster micrometer seating die at .010 for 75 gr A-Max.  I have to load like 70 rounds to cover the entire range, asuming i will have to pull some on the high end … gah lots to to!!!

Wow Aadland scope covers are better than I imagined… I just got my pair for my Vortex Viper PST and he has changed them from the old version.  The new ones have a screw clamp system that fits perfect!, as soon as my camera batteries charge i will post some pictures.

Aadland scope covers are so much better than the standard, I cant make a good comparison.  The new ones are clamped on the scope and same price as the old “push to fit” ones.  my camera is not working so i posted a phone pic.  it is not clear.  I will post a good pick soon as i get all this stuff working together.

I don't know how rough it will be up there, but I found some good flip up scope caps for viper pst's you might want to consider.

Made by Aadland Engineering LLC  shop.aadmount.com.  These appear much more robust than butler creek flip ups ( they should be at 5 or 6 times the price).  I will follow this thread with interest!

Thanks for the information, I swap scopes between 2 Tikkas with pic rails from MT, using a DNZ one piece Freedom reaper mount.  It is not perfectly repeatable but I use a torque wrench and it's close.

Depending on why you want to suppress it, I opt for performance.  if it matters, you will have a hard time finding a soft case that fits a 31″ barrel lol.

It appears to be a cast unit, no idea if that is a problem.

Screws are fine but good replacement screws are available on MT site and I plan to get some.
