Posted by Dog Down on March 20, 2015 at 2:58 pmHi Guys,
I've started a DIY build of a new gun for a fly in Moose hunting trip this fall in Northern Ontario.
Thought it would be of interest to some of you who like tinkering and doing some of you own gun smithing. The gun will be assembled around a 300WSM action with a 9/16 – 24 threaded barrel.
– Full bedded B&C hunter stock / Bedding compound from “Ballistic Studies”
http://www.ballisticstudies.com/shop/MatchGrade+Bedding+Products/MatchGrade+Rifle+Bedding+Compound.html
– EGW 20moa rail (cut back to receiver length) or MT rail.
– NightForce Rings
– Vortex PST MOA Illuminated
– Muzzle brake (TBD)
– Titanium / Carbon Fibre bolt handle
– Load developement with Nosler 190gr LR Accubonds / H4831scI'll update each step as its completed.

Bedding the Stock…
Just spent the last 3 hours making a Jig and hand routering the B&C stock I'm using for the project.
No CNC to do this so I went a little Redneck and made my own with a Router and carbide 1/4″ milling bit.
Built the plywood Jig, then used fences with washers for spacing to make sure I had a stop point when routering to avoid killing the stock. Bad video but you get the idea…
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DCBGf5Ujgx8I removed the milled recoil lug completely out of the stock as per instructions and advice from several gunsmiths, and removed material for a new lug. This allows me to bed the rifle with the recoil lug glued to the action. It will separate from the action and be bedded permanently in the stock when complete.
Material was also removed from the sides and tang to give a complete base for compound.
Once the steel recoil lug arrives I'll update the post when I actually epoxy / bed the action to the stock.
Here's the result of the DIY milling…I think it turned out great, you would never know it was done by hand.***Update***
Just bedded the action to the B&C stock…first bedding job so hoping for the best.
We'll find out tomorrow morning. -

LOL, I think he's just setting up the thread so as he works on it he can edit each post with his steps and have them all listed on the first page. It should be really interesting to see how it develops. I look forward to pictures Dog Down!

I don't know how rough it will be up there, but I found some good flip up scope caps for viper pst's you might want to consider.
Made by Aadland Engineering LLC shop.aadmount.com. These appear much more robust than butler creek flip ups ( they should be at 5 or 6 times the price). I will follow this thread with interest!

Wow Aadland scope covers are better than I imagined… I just got my pair for my Vortex Viper PST and he has changed them from the old version. The new ones have a screw clamp system that fits perfect!, as soon as my camera batteries charge i will post some pictures.
Love this scope cover
eh srry for photo scale.
Aadland scope covers are so much better than the standard, I cant make a good comparison. The new ones are clamped on the scope and same price as the old “push to fit” ones. my camera is not working so i posted a phone pic. it is not clear. I will post a good pick soon as i get all this stuff working together.
