Witt manufacturing clamp on muzzle brake
Posted by Ericbc7 on March 18, 2015 at 5:38 amMy t3 Hunter in 30-06 kicked like a mule untile I put the Witt muzzle brake on. I am concerned that this unit won't last. I have no evidence it Is failing but just worried it is gonna go some day. Does anyone have a significant number of rounds through this type of brake?

I have about 200 rounds through a 300wm kantrol brake with no sign of falling off. However, there is sign that the metal has melted around the baffle holes. I've email the company and I'm awaiting a response.

Thanks for the reply, I'll keep a close eye on it! Based on your picture, your brake is well centered at least.

What is that thing MADE out of? Also, what's with the line around the center? It looks like what you'd find on injection molded plastic parts.
The brake DOES look like it's functioning though.

It appears to be a cast unit, no idea if that is a problem.

I just checked and Witt Manufacturing makes their brakes from 416 stainless. It's the same stuff a lot of after market stainless barrels are made of. You're probably fine for some time Eric.
Vixty on the other hand with the Kahntrol brake (I can't access their site due to my antivirus detecting malware and blocking it) may have an issue. Theirs are apparently made out of machined aluminum. I'm guessing his 300wm is throwing some exceedingly hot gasses which is melting the baffles and is going to lose brake effectiveness down the line.

I get an email back from kantrol and the owner explained that this is normal wear and its just starting to break in. What looks like cracks are actually steps from the brake being machines from both sides.
I was told once the carbon and copper start to bonding to the surface that the erosion will stop. I guess that means I need to stop cleaning it. :-[ I have been assured however that this brake will outlast my rifle barrel.
