They can't shoot 1/2″ every day. I'm happy with anything 3/4″ or better at 100, and don't have a problem with 4″ at 400.
3″ is better, tho. 😉

If you're going with a pic rail, I've heard some good things about the Weaver tactical rings.

Keep an eye on those factory rings. They are famous for not holding. If you decide to upgrade, I would suggest Talley Light Weights.

If wind isn't a problem, you can stretch that Sporter out. Always amazes me what a well built .223, and a steady hand can do. No wind, and 600 is boring with my Super Varmint.

Try some 165 Ballistic Tips with around 45 gr Varget and tweak it from there. You'll have a heck of a hunting load when you're done.

I've shot mine out to 400 when it was factory stock, with a factory Laminated stock…un-bedded.
I've since pillar bedded it into a factory synthetic stock, and am working on load development for it now. When I'm done with that, I'll pillar and glass bed it into the factory Laminated stock and work up some loads with it that way.
You can't mess around with them enough! ;D

Look up Triad Tactical. I have one of theirs on “Big Louie”, a previous Gun Of The Month. It looks a lot like the ones pictured.

Start out seating the bullets .010″ off the lands. With powder, start out loading 3 grains below book maximum, and work up in 1/2 grain increments until you reach the listed maximum charge in the manual you are using. You're probably safe to go over by a grain or two, but that's your call.
168 VLD's will fit in your long action magazine, if it's the same ID as a T3. Be sure to use the “Hunting” VLD in the orange box, if you're going to hunt with the load you're developing.
My 7 Mag T3 is an absolute hammer with 160 AccuBombs, and I'm sure yours will shoot great too.

You might need to “chase the lands”. If you're reloading, your throat has eroded, and you're getting more bullet jump to hit the lands.
Take a measurement of bullet ogive to lands relationship, and you'll have to be seating the bullet farther out to get the same relationship as before. Your throat has eroded some with shooting.

What is your intended use, hunting or punching paper?
80 gr VLD's hammer in the 8 twist. That's what I shoot in my Super Varmint in F-TR competition. Never could get the A Maxes to shoot in mine.

4064 is a slow powder, that shines in a .308 with heavier bullets. I've never got it to work in my 708's.
