Which powder should I use?
Posted by m_freeman on March 12, 2015 at 12:21 amI only have time and resources to work up one load this week for an upcoming hunt. Bullet 120gr Barnes TTSX in -7mm-08 -22″ barrel Tikka, Brass -Norma -CCI primers. I have to choose between Varget or RL15? I am leaning towards the RL15.

I don't have any experience with 7mm-08. Hodgdon lists start load for Varget +120 gr (not sure if barns ttsx). At 42.5 gr and max at 45 gr. alliant shows 42 gr of reloader15 for 130 gr sp.
Google search will get you lots of loads and get you starting point.
Good luck !

You might also try CFE-223 from Hodgdon. You're shooting Barnes which iirc are solid copper, so a powder that helps limit copper fouling is probably a decent choice. Velocity on Hodgdon's site list is comparable to slightly higher than Varget, with CFE-223 starting loads at 46gr and max at 49.5gr.
Either way, Varget/RL-15 are both fine for that round. It's basically a coin flip. Alliant doesn't have data specifically for the 120gr, the closest they have listed is 115gr with a max charge of 46gr.

Varget. It's been my 708 standby for 4-708's with both 120's and 140's for 7 years.

I would go with Varget. I too have had great success in my 708 with it

Has anyone used the new IMR4166 in this round? -it seems to be near 4064 according to a guy with the handle catshooter on the forums.

4064 is a slow powder, that shines in a .308 with heavier bullets. I've never got it to work in my 708's.
