Barrel replacement
Posted by Scottymark on March 6, 2015 at 4:10 amCan anyone please telle how many shots I should expect from my 243 stainless t3 lite. I estimate it's had about 2000 to 2500 rounds through it (half factory and half reloads). The reloads have been towards the maximum end. All handf loads would previously shoot about .6 Moa. Now they seem to be a bit all over the place probably to 1.5 + Moa.
.
I'll check the scope out first if that's not the problem them I imagine it will be the barrel.
.
Does anyone know where I can buy a replacement barrel or possibly a varmint barrel (I'll change the stock). I live in Western Sydney, nsw, Aus.
Thanks

With a .243 Win and that many rounds with those pressures, I'm surprised it's not shooting worse than it is. I imagine it's almost certainly the barrel. That caliber likes to burn em up.
Unfortunately, I don't have any information on barrels in Australia.

Get it rebarreled for 300 + barrel from longbarrels in texas. I would buy the barrel from bugholes.com (great guy to deal with). I originally bought two from them but I had a change in heart because the cost to do two barrels is 600 total. I bought a criterion barrel for my savage and had those two krieger barrels spun up instead – I'll stay with my savages – no sense in messing something already so perfect. Traded my 308 for another Savage 30-06 so that ends my love affair with Tikkas ;(
FYI, my tikka was a tac driver – just like my savages. I just wanted something new to play with. Cheer!

Yea 2500 round in .243 is way over likely life for a factory barrel. Even competition barrels in this caliber often burn out before 1800 rnds (some at less than 1000). If you want to extend your replacement barrel life you might want to look into salt bath nitriding your replacement barrel. If you bore scope the barrel and see “alligatoring” you might be able to cut the barrel and re chamber for a few hundred or 1000 rounds, but better to get a new barrel.
My advice is based on reading forums not personal exp. -

Mark,
You might need to “chase the lands”. If you're reloading, your throat has eroded, and you're getting more bullet jump to hit the lands.
Take a measurement of bullet ogive to lands relationship, and you'll have to be seating the bullet farther out to get the same relationship as before. Your throat has eroded some with shooting.

Mark,
You will be very lucky to find a factory barrel unless someone has a take off as Tikka/Beretta don't seem to be keen to supply barrels. Just go with a Truflite or a Hardy from NZ if you can import one.
