Heard some concerning things about the Sightron STAC 4-20.
The more expensive STAC 2.5-17.5 is getting much better reviews for $900 vs the $400 4-20

I am a budget conscience consumer and I can't say yet which scope I will try, the Minox and others are attractive(Much better than my 30 year old Leupold 2-7 duplex which is wonky).  It may be that the SWFA SS 10X is a better bargain option…since I have one.  I think I will try an STAC 4-20, but will be open to buying the more expensive one if I'm not happy.

Sightron 8×32 (love it)
SWFA ss 10X
Weaver classic 6-24 (got for a steal from Modway)
Some other cheapos

I have been swapping my good scopes between my nicer rifles, but if you want a long range scope – get the Sightron 8×32.  I got mine super cheap from SWFA on their Black Friday sale last fall.

If you want to save money keep posted as I will update this thread as I learn new things.

Btw I tried the Millet tac scopes and it was a disaster- they look good but mine was huge and heavy and the erector broke right away on my 30-06.

Ah thanks Larkin! My goal with the rubber horse stall pad was to avoid any corrosion from moisture from the slab.  I will be sure to use some petrolium based lube.
Freaking 800 lbs… I need more local, reliable friends lol

Just an aside, I used to shoot trap and have 400 lbs of 7.5 shot… I plan to store that in the safe also lol- unless the advertised 42 gun is wildly inaccurate (it is inaccurate just not sure if it is wildly so).

I just bought a pound of 8208 to try.  I will post results.  I also like the new IMR4166 which has good potential for a few dollars more.  I have a Magnetospeed chrono so will be testing all with vel info.

I have installed aftermarket trigger springs in most of my T3's (shhhh in case the liability police are monitoring) and the factory trigger is superb with the specialty springs.  Don't spend the money on a Jard or other until you try that simple modification.  Pulling shots after new spring will only happen if you sneeze or get “goosed”.

I use “Ernie the gunsmith” varmint springs at a cost of around $10 US.

Also I just installed a new bolt handle (the carbon fiber one – Lumlys?- I forget). Big improvement in the Berserk stock.  The factory one was ok in the factory stock, but I like the ergonomics of the larger handle with the Berserk.  Btw, the carbon & titanium aftermarket is noticeably lighter than the ss factory bolt handle.

My only complaint has nothing to do with rifle- my local public range is closed for foreseeable future!

I have to use the range near my parents (150 miles away- better range actually- I guess I will be spending lots of time at the parents).  Not a big hardship actually since I am there often for our business, it is just my loading equipment is here.

I have a practical question for you guys with safes:

If you bolted them to concrete floor how did you manage to locate holes and slide safe back over?

Here is my plan for this 800# or so safe.

Slide it into place (garage, concrete floor)
Mark holes on concrete
Slide safe away and drill holes with 5/8 impact drill/carbide bit.
Slide 1/2 inch horse stall pad over holes, mark locations(maybe use cardboard template) and hole saw the stall pad.
Move pad over holes
Oil or dish soap pad to allow safe to slide, and shove safe over pad to match holes holes
Set fastenall anchors with setting tool and torque bolts

My question is how do I keep pad from sliding when I push safe?

Black hills ammo sells a 77gr .223 round that shoots well in my 1:8 twist.  If just looking for something to break in the barrel and have some fun, midway has Fiocchi 50 gr v max on sale.

Don't expect best accuracy with that light bullet, but I have read decent things about this ammo and it holds together in 1:7 guns I've heard.  I would caution against the steel cased stuff- save that for a “fun gun”.  Also palmetto state armory armory recently had Speer gold dot 64 gr ammo on sale for $9.99/20.  Not sure if still on sale.

I get decent groups with 53gr bthp's but those are not loaded ammo – and not nearly as accurate as the heavys (still at or under an inch at 100 yds).

Also Brownells has Lapua .223 brass on sale for $44.95 which is good price!

Hi n4rod, welcome and congrats on a fine rifle.  I have not used a 595 but your cartridge /rifle combination should get you under an inch at 100 yds.  Take it apart clean everything (adjust trigger if you wish) and torque the action screws to 30-35 in-lbs to start and try again.  I am not aware of reasonably priced after market magazines and as you know the factory ones are pretty dear!

The 300 WSM has a larger Diameter than the 30-06 family of cartridges.  The .260 rem is a .308 necked down and a 308 is a short 30-06.  Hope it works!

Whichever you choose you will have a good shooter.  I like stainless, but an adjustable stock is nice also.  The super light fluted might be too light for my taste ( I have a T3 Sporter in 6.5×55- heavy barrel & laminated stock).
