Purchased M595 in 7mm-08 Today
Just joined this forum today and hope I can find out about the rifle I just purchased. This is my first Tikka rifle. I bought it used today. It's a model 595 in 7mm-08. I must confess, I am a Remington 700 man, purchasing my first one in 1968. I still have it, a 700 BDL in 30/06. I have other model 700s in .223, .243, 6mm, 7mm-08, and .308. Looking for one in 260 Remington. So it's a little strange discovering a different brand of rifle.
I set up at 100 yds at a range today and shot it with Barnes Vortex 120 gr TSX, Fusion 140 gr, Superformance 139 gr, Remington Corelokt 140 gr, Federal Premium 140 gr, and Hornady American Whitetail 139 gr ammo. All the ammo shot under 2 MOA at 100 yds. Not bad for a 67 year old disabled Vietnam vet with bad eyes. I'm sure I can do better, but the range was packed on this holiday and I was seriously nervous with all the people there. This is a public range in a National Forest so no range officers are present to keep an eye on everyone. I'll go back and try it again after I change scopes.
I enjoyed shooting this rifle. It seemed to kick more than I expected, but don't all guns seem to kick more when at the range? It has a nice trigger and I hear it's adjustable. The bolt is nice and smooth. I'm going to try to locate a user's manual. It had a Smith & Wesson 3 to 9 power scope on it and I will change that out soon. Just ordered a Picatinny rail scope base for it and will mount one of my Leupolds on it with Burris XTR rings. I use those EGW bases, XTR rings, and Leupold scopes on all my rifles, centerfire, in-line blackpowder, and rimfire.
Pretty happy with my first rifle other than a Remington in 48 years of shooting model 700s.
I checked out spare mags on the internet today. I was really surprised at the asking prices. Pretty high! Anyone have any experience in mags and if I should go with factory originals or are there any aftermarket ones out there that are any good?
Thanks,
Rod
