Several military snipers use the 300 win mag for work. I'm sure it'll do very well. That said, just snag some heavy match bullets to make use of the additional powder capacity. I'm assuming you didn't want to use a heavier bullet with the .30-06 since the velocities would be lower.
I shoot Berger 185g Juggernaut Tacticals at 2900 from a .30-06 with a 29″ barrel. We did get them up to 2998, but figured 2900 was just plenty considering the increase in recoil with the 2998 loads.

Since the .308 is just a cut down .30-06 there shouldn't be any problem at all. You're basically just wishing to acquire a long action rifle chambered in .308
Tikkas are all manufactured in the long action configuration and to make it a short action, they just put in a shorter bolt stop. Change it out and voila, long action.

I'm going to agree with Yukonal and vixty. Vortex and Leupold are both solid brands but if your starting target is closer than ~200m you're probably over magnifying and it's going to be hard to track if it's moving. 16 power is more than adequate for ~400-500m.

IMO, it doesn't matter what you hit them with, if it's not in the CNS there's a chance they're going to run. Few years ago my dad was cussed out for hitting his buck between the antlers and cracked the skull plate. The guy mounting that one was not amused.

Looks like you've already figured out the solutions to your problem. There are different bottom metals for the T3's available that accept AICS mags that have a longer COAL. Other than that, it's one of the three options you listed before.
If you're single feeding, there are a few mag inserts to make it easier as well.

I worked up a load over last summer before hunting season using Berger 185gr Juggernaut OTM Tactical heads in 30 cal.
Even though they don't 'recommend' hunting with them, it didn't appear that it mattered to the recipient.

There seem to be a number of interesting powders coming out on the market recently with different burn characteristics that I want to test out. You've now given me another one to test. I just have to figure out what to use to test it with. I don't have anything smaller than a .243 with a short barrel to use.
At least Hodgdon (owner of IMR) has data for it on their site. Alliant doesn't even list Reloader 23 and 26 as products for sale, even if they do have some load recipes they've worked. Those powders have me intrigued.

Beretta customer service is one of the worst on the planet.
Ship the rifle to our shop with the ammo you are using. We'll see if we can get to the bottom of it.
And THAT is why Tikka Performance is awesome. Among several other reasons.

How much difference does a brake make anyway? I've never shot a rifle that had one on it, so I'm curious. I normally shoot the full length cartridges like the .30-06, .270 Win, and 6.5-06 and had never even considered a brake, but then the rifles are usually fairly substantial, so there's plenty of mass.

I'm not sure how it would effect performance, but what do you have to lose by following one? It's a new rifle, and the more you learn about how it functions the better you'll be able to feel when it's 'off' and needs some work.

Kid obviously has his priorities right if he went down protecting the precious magazine. We never heard, but is the magazine OK? ;D

Not sure if you've checked the crown, but if there's even a little chip it'll throw rounds all over. Since it's new I'd assume it doesn't, but you can never be sure. You might also check the throat to see if the stainless was poor and it lost a flake of steel in that area. Because of the crystalline structure of stainless, it'll flake instead of pit like cro-moly does.

I think Robert_P said they were working on getting an aluminum replacement for the factory bottom metal into the Tikka Performance store. So whenever that happens, shipping would probably cheaper than from NZ.
