Hey YukonAl I recently bought a 6.5×55 Sporter with an eye to most Deer in North America. If I get a chance to do a moose in AL I will go with a .338 mag with Barnes bullets.
Lots of moose taken with the swede, but AL moose are big and why would I limit myself? A good friend went with .338 win mag and put 2 in boiler room of massive bull and he brought home a deep freeze of meat. I'm not kidding, he bought a deep freeze from Home Depot and filled it with meat!
Great huntShipped the freezer home and ate well for over a year

Eh YukonAl is mostly correct. My shooting is single shot usually. I do have expensive aftermarket magazines for my .223, but I have to agree with YukonAl that there is no advantage to having 3 more rounds available for any given target set up… This is not what YukonAl said, but is my take on his statement.
Also if you are looking for good advice , then follow dogdown's replies. He has a keen insight on accurate loading.

No I am gun – poor right now lol. And my T3 Sporter is 1:8 twist as is, if I watched the .223 video of the 1000 yd challenge I would pay half over retail for a 1:8 twist .223
Congrats YukonAl!

I have used “clamp on brakes” but recognize that there is no substitute for a gunsmith installed- threaded brake of most any design.

The new IMR 4166 might have a role to play. I haven't finished my testing but at the lower vel node it is very nice with 75gr A-max. I plan to test the Berger 80.5 soon with the powder.

Hey Millhouse, do you have calipers and a means to carefully measure dimensions? I would check the differences between the two brands of ammo.

Hey crossfire thanks so much for your input! I've been on road for a couple weeks and just saw your post. And thanks Dog for the heads up on 6.5 guys (which I do indeed follow lol). Now an update:
I am still waiting on my cheap Lapua brass from bullets.com but broke down and just recieved 100 pieces from Sinclair which I ordered because I needed some tempilaq (which is cheaper on sinclair/brownells than Amazon) to set my new annealing machine (ordered from “anneal Eeze ” which has not arrived yet lol. The upshot is, I now have 6.5×55 Lapua brass, 500 140 gr Berger VLD Hybrid bullets, Wolf large rifle primers and a variety of powders including R-22, H4350 and several others.
I have now a Lee collet die, Redding body die and L.E. Wilson chamber seating die all in 6.5×55 and am “reving up my reloading shoes” to start finding loads!
I do have to wait on my mountain tactical rail so I can put my Vortex scope on it but I suppose anticipation adds to the sweetness of this whole situation lol.
I am proceeding with my prelim loading but I hate to damage one of my new Lapua pieces of brass for setting the loading depth. I will do it (by cutting slots in the neck of a piece of brass to seat a bullet to the lands) and just mourn the loss of one piece of premium brass. Loaded ammo was $27/20 Win 140 gr.
I was just in Scheels in Fargo, ND today to get a pound of R-22 and found a Dillon Media separator labeled $59.99 but with the sign saying $49.99. I asked an employee about it and he said they would honor the lower price so got it for $10 off! Not a great deal but I enjoy any deal. It will be great for separating ss pins from brass.
I also got a box of 50 XLR Barnes 6.5 127 gr bullets for deer hunting and testing – which seem promising in the Tikka's 1:8 twist.Oh I also got an Omega electronic trickler and check weights to calibrate my Gempro 250 scale with the hope my extereem spread on velocities will go down.
Whew, lots of stuff, lots of detail, it's gonna be a fun next couple weeks!
