New T3 CTR user looking for scope
Posted by Planespotting on July 8, 2015 at 7:39 pmHello,
I am looking for a scope to mount on my T3 CTR .308. I would like as inexpensive as possible while still being able to hit paper or steel at 500 yards. I do not have a spotter most of the time, so I will need to work through the scope as much as possible. I also have no formal training in using a scope for long range shooting so I do not know how to do all of the math for precision shooting as of yet.
One class I wish to take asks for the following:
- Scope rifle capable of 1MOA or better
- Rifle scope with BDC or target turrets
- Mil-Dot/TMR reticles are preferred
With all of this in mind is there an inexpensive scope that will serve me well until I can pick up a Nightforce? One recommendation I have seen is for a Leupold Mark AR MOD1 6-18×40. I also am a fan of Vortex and was going to get a PST 6-24×50 and just be done with it. However I have been able to look through a Nightforce at the range recently and would like that to be my ultimate goal with steel at 1000 yards my final objective.
TIA!

296 BullseyesHi get the vortex over the Leupold , and when you've saved up there's better scopes than the Nightforce, I have one , a nxs 5.5 x 22 on my Tikka , if you've saved up a lot the Schmidt & Bender PM 11 is in a different league , for around the same money has the Nightforce there's the Kahles 624 i and the Minox Zp5 both have better glass , also have a look at the tube size if you can deside on a scope to start with that has the same size as the one you'll end up with, you could save yourself some money , check out WWE.TIER.ONE.EU there Unimount is hard to beat

105 BullseyesI shoot both of these scopes on my CTR and another Tikka…both scopes are great and track well.
I can spot hits on various paper targets easily at 200yrds…and have shot both scopes out 1000+ yrds on various gongs and the occasional bad rock that needs an ass kicking…Lol…http://www.vortexoptics.com/product/vortex-viper-hs-t-6-24×50-riflescope-with-vmr-1-moa-reticle
http://www.vortexoptics.com/product/vortex-viper-hs-6-24×50-riflescope-with-v-plex-moa-reticleNot sure of its in your price range but well worth the money for either model, especially with the warranty that everyone talks about. I have 3 Vortex scopes and have not regretted buying either one.

296 BullseyesAlso if you go for the Vortex you could be happy with it and decided not to get a more expensive scope , Over here in England the vortex comes in at £1400 so it's not a cheap scope and well upto the shooting you intend to do

1 BullseyeWell, I am getting a Vortex HST 4-16×44 with MOA reticle and turrets. Should be good for 500 yards, the max I can do at my range. I will be getting a better scope if I get better a shooting and work on the 1000 yard goal.

105 BullseyesYou'll be fine even at 1000 with that scope, mirage will be your biggest enemy at extended ranges.

21 BullseyesVortex is fine, and total warranty. You won't regret

1 BullseyeG'day
I saw this post and wanted to get your thoughts on a similar matter.
I've put a deposit on a T3 CTR .308 as well but looking for a scope that will shoot well up to 300-400 yards
I was looking to spend same bucks for the scope as the rifle and wanted to get opinions on which scope is good for hunting low light conditions.
The top contender currently is the Burris eliminator 3.
feel free to share opinions/advice.
thanks

296 BullseyesFor hunting it has to be a Ziess V8 , but saying that I've been talking to the guys at Minox there NEW RANGE is really worth the money , there new ZP5 is my choice over the s&b pm11

1 BullseyeThanks for the quick reply Larkin.
I'm in Australia and those scopes are hard to find let alone buy. Did a bit of research and really impressive piece of gear for the advertised prices.
I had a look at the Zeiss V8 range and they are above 3k+ here in AU and above my budget.
Probably looking to spend no more than 2k since the rifle is going to cost around that.
Any thoughts on Burris eliminators?

296 BullseyesHi don't know about the Burris , for a person on a budget look at Vortex, or the cheaper Ziess ranges

1 BullseyeCheck out the SWFA Super Sniper line. The fixed power scopes are only $299. I have the 10X, 12X and 3-15. All three work great. the 3-15 is $699. I know the name sounds hokey but the glass is good and the dial up on the turrets is totally repeatable.

21 BullseyesSWFA scopes are only available in the U.S. as far as i know. They are excellent quality and if you have a source, then by all means go for the magnification and features you like. I have the SWFA 10x and wish i had the variable for $100+ more.

105 BullseyesRifle looks great…I especially like the change / update on the mag!
Nosler 155gr Match shoots amazingly well for factory ammo out of my CTR.
Give it a try, its my go to ammo when I'm not shooting reloads.
