Varmint .308W GRS longrange stock custom makeover
Posted by Murderface on March 4, 2014 at 5:40 amGuys, just wanted to show off my Tikka .308W custom. As you can see my 20MAO rail is on backwards 😮 .Its now on properly.
I got the stock directly from GRS as no one was bringing them in back then so I had to get my own. I put a 20MOA EGW picatinny rail, leupold rings and a Bushnell 4.5x30x50 Elite 6400 scope. The muzzle break is a bolt on type. I thought I would go this way as some of the shooting ranges complain about the noise. Its not hard to remove and replace when needed. The brake has significantly reduced recoil and muzzle flip, especially when shooting from a bench. This thing now shoots easily sub 1/2 MOA using tuned handloads. It's not that practical as a hunting rifle any more as it weighs a ton but as a longrange bomber it outshoots may a Remington tact-i-cool rifles on the range. Hope you like it and please replytisme replied 11 years ago 4 Members · 8 Replies -

Larkin, yes the finish on the stock is exceptional. The action drops straight in and even came with a new recoil lug. It has the GRS logo etched into the side and the edges of the logo are so sharp and defined you would swear it couldn't possibly be made of wood. Well worth the investment.

Nail Driver,
The mag system is just the stock one off the old rifle. Just pull it out of the old stock and it fits snug into the GRS.
I'm using Sierra Palma Match 155gn. I have them seated as far out as possible, just enough so the wont fall out of the case. They are still not touching the lands though. They wont fit into the mag, so I have to single feed, however that's not an issue while target shooting. For hunting loads I use Sierra Gamekings 150gn SPBT, also I have been using Winchester roundnose (.30-30) projectiles. The pig was taken using Winchester roundnose projectile. All loads are with 44gn of 2206H powder. Hunting rounds are seated deep enough to fit into the mag.
I know that Tikka's have a long throat to accommodate longer projectiles. I have been toying with the idea of using some 200 to 220gn Berger's and seat them to the lands but really I still have about 700 Palma Sierras which are shooting fine for now. Bergers have a really long ogive so you'll never get them to seat on the lands with a 155gn VLD or similar. Its just one of those things about Tikka's is the length of the throat. Other than getting a gunsmith to adjust it, there's not much else I can think of to correct it. Maybe if you did alter the throat the gun might shoot like crap. You never know. -

I have the same problem so I fitted a bottom metal to take ACIS mags. Still couldn't get the berger 155 near the lands. I don't think they would get near even if you only just seated them into the case. I gave up with 155 bergers in the end after trying some 175 SMK and getting the to group a 1/4 inch at 100 yards with enough speed to go out to 1000yards form the short barrel. 200 grain Bergers would be worth trying.

I did some work on my factory mag and im oal of 2.88 inches or 2.204 from the ogive, useing 175 berger hunting vlds and getting .50 at 100. Im still .48 off the lands but i cant complain with a half inch group.
