Tikka T3 Super Varmint Magazine Problems
Posted by Brumby53 on November 30, 2014 at 1:25 amHi all I have a T3 Super Varmint in .223 and having occasional issues with the Magazine. (So note this is the longer mag not the shorter one found on sporters)
First round feeds perfectly, some of the subsequent rounds tilt back so the bolt slides over the top of the round. I have dismantled the mag checked for any little tags etc left over from the molding process, gave everything a gentle rub over with some 400 wet and dry paper, reversed the spring in the magazine so the first bend in the spring sits under the back of the follower but it all made no difference.
The follower does not appear to be catching on anything. Anyone had similar problems? Or have any suggestions. Pics show a round sitting normally 2nd pic is a round tilted back, I have made this a bit worse than actually happens to show clearly what happens. It doesn't take much of a tilt backwards for the bolt to clear the top of the rim when it is pushed forward.
Any help would be appreciated.Brumby53 replied 9 years, 2 months ago 6 Members · 7 Replies -

It sure looks like there isn't enough force under the back end of the cartridge. The AR type of magazine take care of this issue by having an anti-tilt designed follower. Tikka mags don't have anything like that.
Maybe call Beretta customer service and see if they can help.

I have the same problem with my .223 6 rnd mag, except my first 2 rounds feed properly but the third presents tail-low. I have not found a fix yet but am considering “stretching” the stock spring in the hope that it provides more upward pressure on the tail of the follower.
Before I mess with (and perhaps damage) the spring, I plan to do the “Tikka T3 .223 Magazine Modification” presented on 24hr campfire forum and plan to incorporate an aftermarket follower another forum member found on Shapeways. The designer of the follower (tunabreath) is currently testing his design and is looking at offering it in various configurations.

We feel your pain….
Our production schedule is brutal right now, but we have our own design in the works with anti-tilt follower & up to 10 rounds. We just need to get the stainless lugs, factory compatible dbm, and AICS compatible dbm done before we start machining them -

The problem seems to to be that the stock springs are underpobwered or provide upward pressure improperly for lots of applications.
Just offer stronger, better springs for cheap.
Stainless lugs are cool if not needed desperately, factory bottom metal is nice but if I spent $70×3 for mags that fit factory, why spend more on bottom metal allowing same mags?
10 round mags- nice no way around it lol.
AICS bottom metal – if way less than CDI then “yay”.

I had similar issue with my 6 shot mag…but my problem was the plastic mag wall had expanded slightly outward or apart allowing the bullet to cant upward in the front. The guides no longer held it level on the follower, making the back dip down so the bolt could not pick it up properly. It may have been from over use…I have no issues with a new mag, only the one I had run about 1000rds through.
A heatgun and clamp fixed my issue. I just heated up the sidewalls, clamped it, and let it cool with some dummy rounds seated properly. That fixed my issue, but who's to say it won't happen again after a few hundred rds.

Ah, I'm the one with the Shapeways follower. An anti-tilt version could definitely be made, but because of the way the follower is retained/installed, you would probably have to split the magazine to install it. I'm not sure if that's a huge problem for people, but splitting the magazine is certainly a lot of effort vs just tipping out the follower in stock configuration. Stronger springs are probably a better bet. An anti-tilt follower would also probably reduce capacity, since the standard follower comes pretty close to bottoming out at capacity (maybe 5-6mm more travel?)
I actually had this problem while playing with my prototype followers – the first was because I made the follower too short initially, and the material I used to extend it had too much drag on the magazine body. The correct length replacement got stuck at the front because it was tilting and wedging itself stuck. I ended up taking material out to allow it to tilt freely, but extending the follower downward to prevent tilting would probably work also.
Moving where the spring mounts to the follower back by the ~5mm that it has would also probably help.

Hi All… thanks for your input I contacted Beretta Australia sent my original to them and they immediately send a replacement Mag but did not indicate what they thought was wrong with the original. The replacement 'seems' to be working ok but I really haven't been able to use it much over the last 5 weeks.
I am still a little skeptical that maybe after a bit of use the problem may re-occur.
I agree it seems there is not enough pressure under the back of the follower but….. when there is just one round in the mag there is no problem it holds the round up with plenty of force. But with 2 or more rounds … nope! Counter intuitive because with multiple rounds the spring should be forcing the rounds up with more pressure (?)
Anyway time will tell …..again thanks for the thoughts/input
