Tikka 7mm SAUM project?

Hi,

First post here. I am looking to build a Tikka T3 in 7mm SAUM w/ a varmint profile type 27″ barrel. I've decided on the 7 SAUM after looking at several options. I want to stick with that caliber. This will be for mostly long range shooting fun, and potentially hunting for deer in CA and goats/pigs in Hawaii.

I've been a long time Savage shooter, but I really like what I've seen with the Tikka actions. My questions are on the best way to go about this project; Which would be the best Tikka model to buy just for the action/magazine and bolt face to use for an eventual 7mm SAUM rifle?

Who would be a good a source to obtain a 27″ 7mm SAUM barrel for the Tikka?

Can I barrel it myself easily w/ a headspace gage, or if not, who would you recommend to do it?

I was thinking about dropping the barreled action in an XLR chassis.

Any info that will help me out with these questions will be appreciated.

Sounds like a fun project…and, welcome! I don't what bolt face a SAUM is, but buy a used Tikka T3 rifle with the same size bolt face, and you are ready to go. Lots of good sources for barrels, go to Accurate Shooter and check out their sponsors and advertisers that sell barrels.

You'll have to have a new barrel chambered, threaded, and fit to your action. That's gunsmith stuff. I've built 3 customs on Tikka actions in the last year, and another one in the works. I've been thru the good, the bad, and the ugly. Hope some of this advice helps.

Thanks, I appreciate it. I did some research and found that the 300 WSM that Tikka offers, is essentially the same size bolt face as the 7mm SAUM (Or within .001″).

Used Tikkas in 300WSM are a dime a dozen, as nobody likes the recoil in such a light rifle. You should be able to pick up a donor cheap, and on just about any hunting forum.

I dunno bout that… I kinda like mine in 300WSM. Yeah, it kicks… but nothing terrible. Might be because mines a varmint though.
