Tikka 300 wsm ss varmint.
Posted by Paul on February 7, 2014 at 3:40 amHi, I am new to the site, I currently own 2 T3s, 300wsm lite ss and 7mm 08 ss lite. Both guns shoot sub MOA .512 and .588 with berger hand loads. I did shoot a .124 group with the 7-08 and 139 Hornady IBs infront of 44.5 grns varget.I have an oppurtunity to purchase an other 300 wsm in the ss Varmint and was wondering what type of accuarcy I could expect, how much better with the heavy barrel. I currently use a 7mm Rem mag magazine in my 300 wsm, Bolt stop cut back, and can seat-out the bergers or sierra MK. I use the 300wsm magazine in my 7-08 and did not have to adjust the bolt stop. I would like the varmint to be a 1000 yard gun. My standard 300 wsm holds 3.5 “group at 500 yards. I can get the Varmint in 7 MM rem mag(have to wait 6 months) but was thinking I could not max out the mag length. So 300 WSM Varmint T3 ss, what can I expect for accuracy? Moose is a 57 ” canada from northern BC

I also have a 7mm-08 Lite SS, and I haven't had time to work up loads for it yet, at least not successfully. Would you provide the details on that 139 IB load? I'd like to know what the COAL is.

Hi The COAL is 2.805 inches, the interbond seems to be a liitle more accurate than the 139sst. I aslo purchased a range certified wheatherby in 223, removed the Bell and Carlson aluminum block stock and replaced it with a boyds thumbhold. I had my gunsmith fit my 7-08 to the wheatherby stock and had it bedded. I will attach a pic in the morning. now my go to rifle for 75% of my hunting, topped with leupold 4.5x 14x 40 VX3 with CDS.

Thanks, I don't have any Varget, but I'll try and match you're results with what I've got available in my rifle. Were you able to get that COAL in the standard magazine?
Did you take the moose with the 7mm-08? Seems like here in the States someone is constantly trying to convince you that 7mm-08 is barely acceptable for large whitetail, marginal for muleys, and if you mention elk in the same sentence you may induce heart attacks.

Hi, Moose was killed with 300 wsm, 165 sst. I have used 165 Ib and barnsx with good results. I have harvested numerous moose with the 154 IB in my 280 rem. I did take a cow moose several years back with my 7-08 and 139 IBs at 180 yards, bullet worked great. Numerous mule deer over the years. I would not hesitate to use the 7-08 on moose or elk at reasonible range. The 280 sends the 154 at 2900 fps and the 7-08 sends the 139 at 2950 fps. Jack O'conner hunted everything in north america with the 270 and 130 grains. Do your part and a well constructed bullet will do its part. 7 -08 is awesome.

Got my hands on a 300WSM SS varmint, drives tacks,, 168 amax in-front of 71.4 grn superfromance, shoot .165 3 shoot group at 100m, I have done this on several occasions. Shoot steel gong on weekend started at 650 yards all hits, no wind move to 855 yards all hit and some adjustment for wind, AWESOME firearm, just got another one in 7 mm REM Mag .

Wish I would have saw this earlier! I also own a T3 Varmint in 300 WSM. Haven't gone past four hundred yards with mine yet (that I can recall), but so far the rifle can out shoot me. Amazing performance! I haven't tried your recipe for loading but it looks good. Myself, I'm using a good “basic” load of 62.1 grns of H380 pushing a 180 grain silver tip set to SAMMI specs for OAL. Does OK for what I'm doing.

For 1000 yds I would be going to 208 A-Max or VLD 210. I reckon most people use far too light bullets in 300 WM/WSM. 168 is far too light, 178/180 is still not the best if you want a long range performer. Don't get tied up chasing high muzzle velocities – a heavier, slower bullet with a high BC will have higher velocity and retained energy than a light, screamer with a low BC. In the .300 magnums anything under 200 grains is too low. You may as well just get a 7mm Rem Mag or .280 and shoot 162/168 high BC bullets.
