T3 Varmint Stainless .223 8 twist loads
Posted by nm9657 on March 13, 2019 at 8:35 pmHello: I just joined this forum after purchasing my second .223 Tikka T3. It was a Y-1 designated demo. It has an 8 twist and a very short free bore in relation to heavier .224 bullets. Does anyone have a good formula for the 60 gr VMAX?

Load to max mag length over 25.5grs of Varget (+/-) .2grs….its been a perfect combo in every 8 twist 223 T3…velocity will be around 2950-3000fps.
If you like the 60gr Amax…try the Nosler 60gr BT Spitzer,…tips are more consistent and better accuracy.

The Varget worked well, especially for a starting load. 25.3 gr (compressed) in a new case with 205m primer. I also had some 335 loads. The vmax 60 just doesn't work with 335. More to follow. Thanks.

I shoot mine with heavier bullets and Vihtavuori powder (a Super Varmint, 600mm/24” barrel) so can’t say anything about those bullets/powder but for 69 gr Scenar i use 23.2 gr VV135 powder. Very accurate load.
I normally shoot 73 & 75 gr ELD Match, 77gr Scenars and 80gr Berger VLD loaded with VV 140 powder, 24.2-24.3 gr / 22.6 gr respectively. All the heavier bullets shoot great at 300 meters and 77 Scenar & 80 Berger shoot crazy accurate.
The ELD’s have MV at 885 mps, Scenar 875 mps and the Berger at 825 mps at 10 degree Celsius. You do the math … -

Reloader 15 @ 25 gr shoots under an inch with my smallest group at .53.

You do the math …I am based in South africa and varget is in very limited quantities here so will be using the Vhutavouri here to. I see their new N540 powder is great for the heavies. (70-80gr) Have you given it a try?

For 77 grain smk’s I use Vihtavuori N140 the N5 powders are double based and can give slightly more pressure

Don’t get me wrong there’s nothing wrong with N5’s you just have to be aware when your getting to the high end of the case capacity

I agree, a compressed load is not something I would try as a newbie. Maybe much later when I am more educated and informed. Learning already a bunch. And lucky to have this group and friends here close by that would guide me.
Thanks for your replies. Appreciate it
