T3 sporter + PST 4-16 help?
Posted by dimwit on December 1, 2015 at 4:52 pmDoes anyone here have a Viper PST 4-16 on top of a sporter/tactical/varmint model? I have a t3 hunter being transferred to my dealer right now and purchased a PST 4-16 that will be here soon after, and I'm hoping to have rings sorted out so that it's all ready to go when it comes in.
I'm going to rebarrel the rifle within the near future to either a medium or heavy palma contour, and I want to get rings that will work with that. I like the looks of the Talley lightweight rings, I'm just not sure whether I can get away with Medium instead of High.

honestly, you can ask this question… but it will pay to wait for a final mount up. ring height is not only determined by clearance but shooter preference as some people like a taller mounting than others. for example, my T3 HB is set up for myself. put it in the hands of my friend that I shoot with and he couldnt hit the broad side of a barn with it. When I ask him whats the problem, his answer was that the scope seemed like it was mounted too high for him. Myself, I find it just rite. Its all about making it feel comfortable when using it.
So, do yourself a solid and wait for rings, get what fits YOU and not what might work. -
But this is America! I don't want to be patient!
Thank you for that little dose of moderation and logic. You're right. 😉

You will need a ring that is .9″ – 1.0″…scope centre to base…I use the PRW Leupold rings in medium if you want to look those up. I think the centre of scope to base is .97″ if memory is correct with medium 30mm ring.
If you have a MT rail or EGW base this combo will give 1/4 – 3/8 clearance on 50mm objective bell on a sporter barrel…and 3/16″ – 1/4 clearance on Varmint / Palma style contour…The MT base seems to be slightly thicker then the EGW base and will give you the least amount of space but they only vary about 1/32″ between the 2…
Heres what a VIPER HSLR 6-24×50 (pretty much same size as your PST) looks like with a MT rail / PRW Medium ring setup on both Tikka Sporter (MT 20moa base) and Varmint model (MT 0moa base cut back to receiver length)…

Get the mountain tactical rail -either 0 or +20 moa. I use the DNZ Freedom Reaper one piece and there is more than enough clearance for my 6-24 Vortex Viper PST. The rail adds significant height so even low – med rings seem to work pretty well. Just to be clear, I have not tried low rings on the mtn tactical rail with a 30mm scope with a 50mm objective.

Eric, I've got the Vortex low rings with MT 20MOA rail mounting a 6-24 Viper HS 30mm tube 50mm objective and it works great. It barely clears my barrel, and I can't use the scope covers that came with it, but my barrel is a lot thicker than factory.

I should probably have clarified a bit. I love my set up, and if you're running a stock size barrel, low rings should work fine clearance wise. Still a good idea to wait and see where your scope will be comfortable for you though.
So, in answer to the original question, with a rail, and medium rings, even with a palma contour, clearance probably won't be an issue.

That looks perfect! The scope caps should have good clearance as well.
