T3 Lite will not fire Hornady
Posted by Robby E on November 23, 2015 at 1:06 pmI own 2 T3's, 25-06 and I just purchased a 7mm Mag. I mounted my scope and bore sighted it. I take the gun to the range yesterday with two different ammos. 154 Hornady SST and 155 Winchester BST. I load the Hornady in for the first shot. I pull the trigger and click was all I got. I ejected the round to find that the primer had been barely touched by the firing pin. I loaded a second Hornady and got the same thing. I loaded a Winchester and shot with no problem. Has anyone ever had this issue with a T3?

My T# handles Hornaday with no problem. You might take the bolt apart and see if there is any thing in the firing pin hole that could be blocking it.

Make sure you actually had 7mm mag ammo! ;D

Since factory ammo based on the H&H case headspace on the belt, the primers should show the same dent even if two brands of ammo are noticeably different in length (or even different magnum calibers).
I had a Ruger m77 that developed a weak firing spring and it became unreliable with certain brands of ammo- I assumed that the different primer cups were different thickness or hardness. Hard to say why a new rifle would exhibit this behavior unless like coyote268 suggested, there is some interference in the bolt's workings from debris or machining.
Good luck and let us know what you find.

I've had similar issues with 308 Superformance SST and 223 Superformance ammo.
Its the only brand/type of ammo I've had misfires….Mostly in 308.Firing pin was not the issue…I don't buy the Superformance line of ammo anymore.
Do a google search on “Hornady SST misfires” and you will be shocked at the number of forum boards discussing this very topic. Everyone tends to think firing pins are the first problem but its usually points back to the ammo.

Ok now that Dogdown has weighed in I fee comfortable in suggesting you have a fireings spring problem. Get an aftermarket spring and tell us the results
I am curious now how since the round head spaces on the belt, how did it misfire on factory loads?
And Dogdown, what is your evaluation? How did this happen? -

I've had misfires with “Superformance” only, no issues with any of Hornady's other ammo.
SST 308 gave me more misfires in 3 boxes of ammo, then I have experienced in all my shooting combined.
Its the only ammo that has misfired in both my 308 Tikka Battue and also 308 CTR.I've had a few misfires with 223 Superformance as well but can honestly say its been only 2-3rds out of about 300rds I have purchased.
Have not had any issue with all Federal, Winchester, Barnes or Nosler factory ammo that I would regularly buy and shoot when not handloading. Firing pins have been checked and no issues, only repeating misfires have been with this Superformance brand of Hornady ammo.
The SST 308 ammo was shot last year (have not bought it since) in temps around 0 to -10 “celcius” at an elevation of about 500-1000ft…

So all the ammo was factory loads. I cleaned the bolt and firing pin. I then switched to Winchester ammo and had no problems. After sighting in the gun I fired some of the Hornady through it and it shot fine. It did not group near as tight as the Winchester but did fire. I took the gun hunting on Friday and was ready to shoot a deer and “click” was all I got. The gun is being sent back to be looked over. Thanks for all of the advice. I'll let you know what it does one I get it back.

What ammo were you hunting with on Sunday?
