T3 Lite vs CTR
Posted by MiniSoda on December 21, 2016 at 4:27 amI'm looking to buy a T3 in .308 in the near future, but I'm not sure which model would best fit my intended purpose. I will be putting the rifle in a chassis (MDT LSS XL), and the rifle will mostly be used for target shooting and some infrequent hunting (at a stand).
While I like the thicker and threaded barrel, as well as the included rail, on the CTR, I'm not sure if that is justification for the price difference from the Lite model (~$375 at my LGS). Especially because the chassis I'm planning on using would allow me to use magazines with the T3 Lite, that feature of the CTR seems to be a waste of money.
However, I realize that if I were to find the Lite's barrel too inconsistent for target shooting, it would easily cost upwards of $500 to get the rifle re-barreled. That being said, I am a new shooter, so perhaps I should be realistic about the Lite being able to outshoot me.
Any opinions/advice?

I have a 308 CTR and enjoy it for both hunting and target shooting. Its super accurate…
You can justify the cost if you want a duel purpose rifle for both hunting and target shooting.
The barrel is better than the lite barrel for shot strings and the bottom metal and 10 capacity mag is nice though expensive.BUT,… if I was doing it over again (purchasing a T3 308) I would most likely buy the varmint model and build around the factory action and barrel. I've done this with a 300wsm varmint and its proven to be a top performer for both long range target shooting and hunting, though it is little heavy to carry…I'm extremely confident every time I pull the trigger so I tend to live with the added weight.

I agree with DD get a varmint and build from there , also the mags are cheaper if you decide to keep the standard stock

Are the only differences between the Varmint and CTR the magazine and (lack of) rail? It seems like the Varmint can come configured with the 20″ threaded barrel, but Tikka's technical specs are a bit hard to confirm.
Unfortunately I can't find a 20″ threaded Varmint in .308 online (perhaps I don't know where to look?). Hopefully my LGS can give me some info.

The barrels are different….the varmint is usually longer and with a thicker profile.
The CTR barrel is almost a compromise between the Lite and Varmint profiles, similar to the Tac model…See attached….

Are all of these configurations not available in the US?
