T3 lacking !
Posted by Porkchop401 on February 9, 2017 at 9:47 pmHowdy fellas , I recently bought a T3 ss left hand 3006, gave it its usual new rifle cleaning, mounted a 3.5-10×44 meopta scope in the supplied freebee rings and headed to the bench.
The first loads tested were Federal fusion 150gr., hand loaded 150 gr sierra GK over Imr 4064, BL-c2, and rl19 at moderate loads.
The Groups averaged around 2.2″ with a double grouping effect where the two almost always touch and 1 is about 2″horizonal to the others.
After the 4 groups I cleaned the rifle and found only moderate fouling . I did find that the stock was contacting the barrel in a few spots . The dremel made quick work and back to the bench.
Shot the series of groups allowing the barrel to cool between groups . The groups shrank to less than 2″with the same horizontal grouping .
I have replaced the freebee rings with Leupold double dovetail mounts. After looking at the stock closely I decided not to invest the time in bedding the action but instead ordered a Boyd's laminated stock to bed it in.
Any suggestions for helping this rifle tighten up are appreciated.
Ps The scope was on a rifle shooting 3/4″ groups so I'm in confident in it.Ericbc7 replied 7 years, 7 months ago 6 Members · 8 Replies -

You need to try different manufactures ammo and different weights and powders

Well Larkin I am with you , has anybody found a bullet/powder combo that tends to be accurate in these rifles that you know of ? I have been hand loading for about 10yrs. mainly focusing on overbore magnums and some large pistol calibers ( now the 3006). One of the first things I noticed is that a 150gr SPBT only has neck tension in upper half of the neck the due to a lack of bearing surface length on these rather short stubby bullets. I suspect a longer heavier bullet may give better results.

Try 175 Sierra Match King with either H4350 or IMR4350 56 grains or so.
As with any load information, carefully work your way up.
200 yards .233 MOA, from a pawn shop rescue M695 30-06.

I appreciate the load, I will give it a try ,I am betting I can load the 180 SGk with similar results.

I had similar issues with a T3 lite…I'll try to dig some old information discussed here on the forum.
Make sure the reinforcement wall on the front sling swivel in the barrel channel is not touching the barrel.
Try increasing the torque on action screws if you haven't reached 45in/lbs…if you are only at 30-35in/lbs
try 40 then 45in/lbs to see if it makes a difference with the current load.Could be just a bad match with the load combo you are trying.

I have clearance between the barrel and stock all the way to the receiver . I will do some experimenting with the receiver bolt tightness. Looking in my inventory I see I have the following bullets to test. 180gr. Speer deep curl, 180gr.Barnes TTSX., 150gr.Sierra GK and 200gr nosler partitions. I am fond of 180gr. in the 06 only changing bullet design depending on the game hunted. This rifle doesn't have to be blistering accurate but 1moa would be very agreeable.

tighten action/stock screws, scrap those rings.

Note dog's comment on torque- get a wheeler fat wrench and make sure the bolts are snugged properly before you do major surgery.
