T3 CTR 308 bolt handle and knob
Just wanted to give a quick review of my new bolt handle and knob. There are not a ton of options available but I found something I really like.
I, like many, wanted to change the awful plastic knob on my rifle. I was not thrilled with the options that I could find. I decided I wanted keep the swept profile of the factory handle and really focus on a new knob. I didn't want to go through the hassle of trying to have the factory handle machined so I figured I would search for a new handle too.
I purchased a handle from Glades Armory. Unfortunately, I could not find where I could just purchase the handle alone so I had to order a knob with it (which I knew I would not use). The handle was threaded to the standard 5/16-24 and had a black melonite finish.
I found a knob I liked at Kampfeld Customs. I ordered the hunter model. I like the size, it was similar to the factory knob. It seemed the only knobs I could find elsewhere were HUGE and I'm not in to a giant hunk of metal hanging on the end of my bolt handle.
I spoke with Karl Kampfeld and he was very nice and helpful. He explained his concern that the shoulder diameter might not match up between the handle I had and his bolt knob. I sent him my handle and he machined the knob down slightly to match the shoulder on the handle. He then cerakoted the knob and handle black for me and sent it back. All at minimal cost. The “melonite” finish on the Glades Armory handle is not a tough as I had thought, so I went with a cerakote finish.
I then used a high strength red loctite to secure the knob to the handle. Finished product below. I'm very happy with it, see picture. And before anyone flames me, the gun was off safety because I was cycling some snap caps through to check my feed, fire and ejection functions with the new handle, no live ammo anywhere around 🙂
