T3 3006 Lite – advice to upgrade to heavier barrel
Posted by lee_enfield_lover on September 21, 2015 at 11:37 pmSo Tikka won't sell any 3006 heavy barrels to Canada, and I'd like one.
What barrel to replace would you replace Tikka T3 lite with in 3006?
I've really enjoyed the accuracy of my T3 in 3006 but it is wanting when I go to the range with the lite barrel on it. While the end result is that I want to hunt with it, I don't mind carrying around another couple of pounds with the heavier barrel and the extra time I get while not waiting for the barrel to cool down will let me enjoy it a little more.
Do you guys have any suggestions for a good heavy or even fluted stainless barrel to replace it with? I'm all ears.
*side note – I've heard various stuff about progressive twist barrels for 3006 from a guy who makes them in Alberta.

Yes – I know they're available in 308 in varmint but just am not as interested.

What you have to do is buy a barrel blank in .30 cal of the shape you want. Then have a gunsmith thread and chamber it for 30-06

Yep. I understand I need a barrel blank. I'm asking what manufacturer makes a great barrel for it that anyone I hope has had good success with.

If I was at that side of the Atlantic I'd just ship it to mountain tactical has they know tikka's inside out and will fit the best barrel for that caliber / action

Check out this thread from another forum to give you some options on all “Canadian” made barrels…

Bartlein, Brux, Hart, Shillen and a number of others.
I'm having a T3 rebarelled with a Bartlein light Palma barrel in .300 Win Mag. Bartlein are making great barrels, which the competition boys are currently favouring. They make gain twist barrels with any rate of twist you want. The Palma barrels come as 31 inch blanks as I recall. Factory barrels have a long waiting list, but bugholes.com and butches reloading have them in stock if you can get them sent to Canada.
Tikka/Sako/Beretta seem to have no interest in supporting their rifles here in the US and Canada, but as good as their barrels are, the US made cut rifled barrels are better.
If you are rebarreling, it's worth having the action faced off to remove the small progression and fitting a Rem style recoil lug. The guys here do that, and so does Chad at Long Rifles Inc.
