Seating depth
Posted by WGK on March 19, 2015 at 10:36 amI plan on starting load development for my”new to me” T3 stainless 300wsm. Even though it probably a long shot I am going to start with Barnes 150gr TTSX. I KNOW BARNES bullets like to sit off the lands so my question to anyone who is currently loading Barnes bullets is where would you recommend that I start in regards to seating depth. I know that no to guns are a like just wonder what your opinion and or experience has been. Thanks.

Welcome, and good question.
With its 1:11 twist the t3 300wsm should shoot the 150 gr ttsx very well. You might even go a bit heavier.
barns recommends 50 thousandths. Use that number to get your powder wt decided and play with seating depth from there.Good luck and these are grat hunting bullets.

Berger (I know you're using Barnes) suggests a minimum twist of 1:11 up to their 210gr VLD's. I'm sure using that 150 TTSX you've got more than enough twist. Even if you're over-rotating it, it's not like the jacket's going to fly off of a Barnes, they're solid copper.

I had good success with TTSX 180's and H4831sc, very accurate…the factory 165TTSX also shot very well from my 300WSM. Its a great bullet but the Amax's or Accubonds that I now shoot are half the cost. If they were cheaper I would have stuck with them but I shoot too much to be blasting these off all the time.
I think a read a post on here somewhere where a guy mentioned he was using Superformance powder with the lighter pills in his 300WSM with great success. And from my own experience they like to loaded to manual specs, no need to chase the lands with this bullet…

This sounds like a great excuse to accelerate the destruction of my 300 WSM barrel! The faster I can fry this barrel, the faster I can get it rebarreled to 7SAUM.
Once we get caught up to our production schedule I'll pick up some & post some load development data…

Any results you want to share? I am very keen to know. A buddy of mine shot a huge moose in ALaska 2 years ago with barns ttsx bullets in his 338 mag. To be honest he could have put it down with any bullet with the shot he made. The performance was first rate but neither projectile was recovered. The load was very accurate on paper.

With turkey season in full swing I haven't made it to the range yet but I will post some results as soon as I do.

Well I made it to the range today and I am pleased with the way my rifle shot. I don't have any pictures but my best group with the Barnes 150gr TTSX was probably an inch and an 1/8 at 120 yards. and I am sure I can get that to tighten up with a little more tweeting on the load. You guys are right these Tikka rifles will shoot.

since you are doing some development, I suggest you try heavier ttsx bullets also.

Eric I did try a 165 and had one decent group with them. This gun is going to be a deer rifle onlym, and I live in East Tn so long shots are not likely. If all else fails I will try some 168 bergers that I have. But if I can get the 150 Barnes to shoot that will be my deer load.

ah well done, you will probably see good performance on deer sized game regardless of the small differences in bullet weight. the main thing is accuracy, so what ever works best in that sense is the way to go.
