Scope mount issue
Posted by KJG67 on January 2, 2016 at 11:55 pmHello – ran into an issue mounting a Vortex Viper PST 4-16×50 using Seekins 30 mm 0.87″ Medium rings to the 20 MOA rail from MT. If you can see in the attached picture, there is a small screw on the magnification ring. The ring wasn't able to turn once the screw hit the rail, so I moved the scope forward slightly. However the rubber ring actually is getting hung up once I get past 5 and I can't zoom much farther. Screws are all torqued to spec.
Any thoughts on how to fix this? Medium rings should have been high enough and I can't move the scope back without getting too much vignetting. Is there a fix other than returning the mediums for medium-high rings?
Thanks.

Hi you should fit the scope so it's nice and comfortable to shoot not just anywhere , so if that the position you want it , ether higher rings , or if you really like them rings get the back of the rail milled down, or see if you can get the screw replace with one with a different head that will fit more snug

I would just grind off a spot on the rail, 'til the screw clears… Rails are cheap…

I must have been tired yesterday. Looked at it again and I just had a bad sight picture working in my basement yesterday. I too thought it was odd being so far forward.
However the rail may be too long for the scope. Barely getting a dollar bill clearing both sides, so I can't move it further back. May have to get that milled down a couple of notches but will spend some time at the range first once it warms up a bit here to check eye relief better.
Thanks for the quick responses.

That's about where I've got mine, but it must be a longer tube than your model since it clears the front of the rail just fine. I think Vortex has approximately the same eye relief on most of their scopes, so you're in the ballpark for a good sight picture. I'd suggest removing a notch or two, or just making it receiver length and touching up the metal with paint to match if it won't fit right.

Remove the rail and cut it back to the receiver length (see attached)…I've had to do this with 2 rifles using MT rails. It will allow you to pull the scope back far enough for all the clearance you need. Its very easy to do. Just cut it with a saw and then sand or flat file (fine) the cut to the slightly rounded profile of the receiver. Apply any matte black exterior spray paint (mask off everything except the new edge) and you are good to go. In my opinion it looks better then having the rail extend past the receiver, just like the CTR and Tactical models from the factory.

You can carefully cut the extra off while it's still on the rifle, with a hacksaw. File sharp edges and finish the shiny area with Birchwood Casey paint pen, used for common gunsmithing.
Like Dog, I've done several…while on the rifle.
