school me on scopes and rings
so its looks like im gonna place a T3 hunter in 6.5×55 on backorder from eurooptics.com. their CS has kept in contact with me and I feel satisfied buying from them.
now while im waiting for the rifle its time to learn about optics! I don't know much as ive never used glass before aside from red-dots. im reading every thing I can about how modern glass works but im having trouble with all the dang acronyms and terms used which are foreign to me. at any rate I was once told you should spend at least as much on your scope as you did on the gun and that will work for me. the gun will be just under $700 so that's the cap im setting on the optic.
I know I need a scope good for both close and semi-long ranges, lets say 20-200 yards. the area I hunt in varies from heavily wooded to open patches with ponds to shoot across. however the gun will be most commonly used for punching paper at 100 and 200 yards at local ranges. I also would like some recommendations for rings. im willing to spend a little more (within limits) to get lighter weight and a firm hold.

That scope is awesome if you need the illuminated reticle. Otherwise you could save a few bucks and get the HS model that has the same glass but without the illuminated reticle.
We were selling the Viper HS 2.5-10×44 for $399. I'll have to check pricing but I bet it hasn't changed.
The 30mm tube will give you plenty of internal adjustment (86MOA) and the glass is superb.
I've switched all my glass to Vortex in the last few years and haven't looked back.
The easiest way to get a good set of rings is to put a picatinny rail on the rifle. Then you are not limited to Sako's Optilock rings.

I used to swear by the EGW Tactical Rings but I shot a comp a couple weeks ago and my Viper PST 6-24×50 moved even though they were torqued to spec. So now I'm a little gun shy.
My SWFA Tactical rings, which only cost me $35, have been bombproof!
Really, once you have the picatinny rail, you can pick from any of the best 30mm rings on the market.

the HS may be a good idea to save a lil coin and weight (2.3 oz), thanks for bringing that to my attention!
now for the optic mount… I don't like rails. ive managed to avoid having rails on any of my guns mostly because I think they are ugly. will no aftermarket mounts fit the 17mm dovetail?
ive heard bad things about the Tikka rings. are the Sako optilock rings the same as the Tikka rings or are they better?
side note: you guys should make it easier to find scopes on your store website. I had to use the search feature to find them. maybe some kind of shortcut on the main page?

Vortex scopes are imo great scopes for the money , I was going to get one of there scopes for my T3 semi custom being built at the moment , but I war offered a 5.5-22 x 50 nxs nightforce for at 60% of retail so it would of been rude not to get it , as for rings theres only one worth getting (imho) and there the unimount rings for third eye tactical ,these people will ship to youhttp://www.ospreyrifles.com/index.php/shop-at-osprey-rifles/evo-leisure-products/product/view/13/131 , -
The optic choice will be a very good one I think. The HS would probably be better as stated above if you don't need the illumination. For rings without using a picatinny base I'd go with Warne rings made specifically for Tikka rifles. I've used Warne rings and really liked them!

Talley Lightweights. Lows will still give you clearance under a 50mm objective.

Larken, I know I said id spend a little more for light weight and quality… but those rings are $400! they also look like they require a rail which I do not want.
yukonal, those talley lightweights look like they may be perfect. ill do some more research on them.

ive been doing some more looking around and thinking. i came to the conclusion that the vortex is too heavy. ive found a number of other scopes such as the leupold 2.5-8×36 which only weighs around 11 oz.

On all my Daughters and Granddaughter and my rifles, (a lot) except for the mounts on my Rugger Hawkeye, everything else has Leupold scopes and DNZ mounts and bases. That's 5 Tikkas in the bunch.
