Reloading 101
All right, folks, this is reloading 101, so don’t come down on me for not being technical enough! The goal here is to get new reloaders off to a good, SAFE, start.
First of all, knowledge is power, the power to do something you didn’t know how to do previously. That being said lets address the subject of knowledge first.
Knowledge will save you from injury. It is kind of hard to enjoy shooting with damage to your eyes or fingers, so lets keep ‘em in good working order. I suggest to new reloaders who always want to know “what equipment should I buy”, that the first piece of equipment they buy is a good basic reloading book. Along with that advice, I include, “actually read it”! I consider the purchase of the book as free, as the knowledge you gain will save you money on the purchase of equipment, and avoid buying the things that don’t work, or are just a waste of money.
Ok, Greg, what book are you talking about, for crying out loud?
Any of the reloading manuals by bullet makers, Hornady, Sierra, Nosler, etc are good places to start, as they give good basic reloading info, with the bonus of getting a ton of reloading data included.
The book that I always recommend is The ABC’S of Reloading. The book is in its 9th edition now, and really gives the beginner a step-by-step understanding of the reloading process. You don’t get any reloading data, but you get great photos and content, and it takes you into some advanced reloading techniques, also. Heck, I just used my edition from the 80’s, I believe, to look up something I had forgotten about! This is a very useful tome that should be on every reloading bench.
Next time we will get into the stuff everyone is waiting for:
Spending money on equipment!
