Recommendations for new stock/chassis in 270WSM
Posted by smk23 on December 12, 2017 at 2:42 pmHi,
I have a Tikka T3 270 WSM (I don't think it's a lite, it doesn't say it on the barrel, but it might be). I don't enjoy shooting it on the bench due to the recoil, but I do appreciate the ballistics/accuracy of the rifle. I'm wondering what some recommendations might be to improve it with either a new stock or chassis. I'm fine with adding some weight, but I would still like to be able to hunt with it. Also, the noise/rattle from the buttstock has got to go. I'm open to either wood or synthetic stock, if I got that route. I'm also willing to keep what I have and try dumping some weight into it. Thanks for suggestions! Willing to spend about $700.

McMillan SAKO Classic or Manners EHT if you don't mind the wait.

Thanks for your reply, I've been looking at both. Do you think both would reduce felt recoil?

First of all have you tried a differant recoil pad and a muzzle break both will help with felt recoil without the expense of a new stock

Take Larkins advice…no stock of chassis will fully cure recoil, may make it a little better but if you are recoil shy and hate it then a muzzle break is really the best upgrade.
I few of us here range / bench shoot 300wsm rifles…and we have installed muzzle breaks.
A good muzzle break will bring recoil down to a 243 kick on a 270-wsm… -

Here's the brake I installed on my Lite barrel…its from a company in NZ. “QuatroMax Brake” http://muzzlebrakes.co.nz
Best muzzle brake I have installed for recoil reduction on any caliber!
I'm thinking the Varimax will be my next purchase from these guys. Great design for range shooting and hunting. -

MG arms will make you a muzzle brake the same contour of your barrel and it will be perfection have one on my winchester model 70 300wsm and its a pussy cat and ive even got it in a light weight stock.

Just on a side note regarding muzzle brakes on T3 Lite rifles…if you are shooting a lite barrel I have found the “vais” style breaks to be the most accurate with little to no POI shift on target.
The custom one I have on my 300wsm improved my range accuracy considerably for multiple shots.
And I love the fact that it has a self tightening port design so you can hand tighten and remove it easily. -

You should check out the Bell and Carlson M40 stock! It looks like a comfortable stock and it seems like it would be good in the field as far as using a squeeze bag for elevation, if that's what your looking for.
I went with the manners t4 tikka stock. I can definitely recommend this one if you have a heavy barrel! It's comfortable and sturdy, and when I squeeze the trigger the cross hairs stay right on target! I can hardly even try to get them off target. Good luck!

Just a side note on muzzle brakes, no offense to anyone, but muzzle brakes just plain suck to shoot next to. Just my opinion. It may be difficult to get someone to spot for you after the first shot. My friend has a hefty brake on his .223 ar15 and I had a major head ache after a day at the range with him.
There's no doubt they cut back on recoil, that is definitely a positive. But you should also consider that you will probably have to shoot the gun the exact same time, evertytime, making sure the gun recoils as straight back as possible. Check out muzzle brake pull off effect. Just some things to consider.

On my 7 mag I m going to try a Edwards recoil reducer. I put one in my Daughters Tikka hunter 308 and it made a world of difference. Also shorten the stock to fit her and installed a limbsaver recoil pad.
