Rebarreling an M695
Hi Guys – I'm new to this forum, but I've read a lot of threads and really appreciate all the good info – Thanks! My question relates to rebarreling an M695 from .270 Win to .280 Rem (24″) to take advantage of the higher bc bullets that are available and also get a bit more velocity with the 24″.
I spoke to a local gunsmith about this and he told me that he thought he would be unable to get the old barrel off (even if two guys were on the breaker bar). He thinks the factory puts them on “hydraulically”. Is he correct on this? Or, does the barrel have left hand threads or something else he might be mistaken about??
His answer seems odd to me because I see other people routinely talking about replacing Tikka barrels. But, on the other hand, I do have a Steyr SSG69 where the barrel was shrink fitted to the action by the factory – so, anything is possible. Thanks in advance for your responses.

My smith also cursed me out when he had to take the barrel off my .270 T3 for it's .280 Ackley replacement barrel. My dad has a 695 that he had re-barreled as well.
Tikkas are notorious for having a tight fitted barrel. They are threaded, not hydraulically pressed, however they do have thread locker on the first couple of threads, and tight tolerances. My smith soaked the entire action/barrel interface in penetrating oil for two days before putting it in the barrel vise for removal and did it himself. He mentioned that he bought a longer bar for more torque, but didn't want to have to use it for fear of twisting the action. He got it off with the regular bar after giving the oil time to work.

They did mine a few months ago no dramas. While its there, get them to face off the action and fit an integrated recoil lug.

I realize that this is an old topic but, I've rebarrelled my m695 and it was not any more difficult than any Remington 700. They are right handed threads.
