Order LA caliber mags to take advantage of seating out .243?
Posted by Hawk45 on July 6, 2013 at 3:34 pmI reload all my rounds, and am getting ready to order a T3 Lite in .243. I was going to order some mags when I order the rifle and was wondering if I should order some of the LA mags (30-06/.270/etc) mags so I can seat out the bullets in my .243. I know the current barrel twist (1:10) isn't optimal for the 105 – 115gr but when I swap out the barrel down the line, I'll get a faster twist. Would it benefit me to swap the bolt stop and get some LA mags or am I just looking to start tinkering when there is no need?
Thanks,

Will your chamber/ throat let you seat them out super long?
Your idea is good. I would just check your chamber to see how much room you have to play.

Maybe someone could reply with their findings. If it's anything like my .223 CTR, magazine length (even with AI mags) is the limiting factor.

I thought there was a bolt stop to limit the travel of the bolt, in conjunction with the difference in magazines, (so you have a different bolt throw for 223 vs. 308 vs. 30-06). If I'm wrong and you're right, that could make for some very interesting loads from anything in the .308 Win Family, I've got a 7mm-08 on the way and loading 154gr Interbonds a bit “out” would be worth some experimentation.

You can just swap out the bolt stop, for a long action caliber stop, and get a long action magazine. Then, the sky's the limit. First, you need to ask someone loading your intended round, what their OAL is. Then measure the inside diameter of your MED action mag to see if you need more room.
That's what I did on my .284 on the home page. I'm seating 180's out to the lands (after chambering with a reamer I designed just for 180's) with room to spare.

Thanks for the info, I think I might have to try that, I probably ought to see what it does out of the box before I get too silly with the tinkering though.

I modified the bolt stop and magazines on my 270WSM to take advantage of loading the bullet out.
The 243 would be a piece of cake since all you would need is a LA mag and a modified bolt stop.
Here is one I did since I'm too cheap to pay for the bolt stop kit:

I'm not even sure you'd have to do it for 243, since it's the same mag as a 308, I think if you compare the COAL of a 243 loaded pretty far out, it's still going to be short of a 165gr. loaded in 308 Win, (that's what I figure the magazine length was made for). Especially with a 1:10″ twist, might not really be worth trying to load anything over 100gr, or extreme VLD stuff. I don't mean to be discouraging, I've just been thinking it over, and that popped into my head. I still think it's worth trying with a 260 or 7mm-08. I have a TC Icon in 7mm-08 that likes Speer Deep Curls seated pretty far out, 0.010″ past the Speer recommendation, but I can't seat Swift Scirrocco II's or Hornady Interbonds out because the plastic tips interfere with the magazine. The Tikka action should give me plenty of opportunity to play with that theory.

So did you decide one way or the other Hawk45? I went ahead and modified the bolt stop on my 7mm-08 and ordered a LA magazine. I'm doing some other things to the rifle but I'll let you know how it works out once I've got the gun shooting again.
