Opening day disaster
Posted by Old Mossy Toes on November 29, 2015 at 11:26 am:'(Hello, first time poster here. Well I have hunted whitetail deer for 25 years. I have never even heard of anything close to what happened to me this past opening day for the Wisconsin rifle season 2015. I bought two new Tikka's in March of this year. One .270 win. The other .308 win. At the range all summer, they both shot very well with no problems. Both held 1 inch or smaller groups at 100 yards. Both liked Hornady SST factory ammo. Both rifles have 100 rounds through them. I decided to use the .308 win. opening day. The rifle miss fired a total of four times at two different 8pt bucks. The firing pin struck the primers on all four shots, but not hard enough. The rifle is on its way back to Beretta. The firing pin was measured, and I was told it was to short. I'm very disappointed, because the bucks were wall hangers.

Man, that's a royal bummer! What was the temperature outside while you were hunting?

You are not the only one having issues with Hornady ammo…And Tikka's are not the only guns having this issue…
I've personally had a lot of misfires with Hornady “Superformance” ammo in cold weather…223 & 308…most guys think its the factory primer and I tend to agree with this, since I have no issues with my firing pins. I don't buy it any more and have not had any other brand of ammo give me the same problems with misfires…I only experienced this in their “Superformance” line of ammo.
Let us know how the gun fires after you change out the firing pin…this will be a good study on before and after results.

So sorry you experienced this. I had same problem in 1986 with a Ruger m77.
The firing spring was bad, and after each firing a pieced primer locked up the bolt. I am nOt sure how you get a new spring but that should solve the problem

Thanks, I'll switch away from Hornady factory ammo. Once I get the .308 win. back. my plan is to do some outdoor range testing in the cold! I'll pick a day in the low teens or 10 degrees. I figure two hours outside before I fire should do, maybe three. Live and learn. Thank god I've taken many deer already, or I'd have PTSD Ha! At least I can laugh about it now. I may have to re-load my own rounds also. Both guns only held tight groups with Hornady Superformance SST.

I like Hornady's bullets, but I don't shoot anybody's ammo except that which I manufacture. I never have misfires! 8) 8)
