Nikon M-308
Posted by Foxfire451s on July 14, 2013 at 8:27 pmI just bought my first Tikka T3 lite in .308. I've been looking at these for a couple years now. I'm thinking about getting the nikon m308 scope with the nikoplex reticle for it. Just curious to know if anyone has any experience with this piece of glass. I ordered the DNZ game reaper to mount it with.

This topic is old i know… 700+ views and no one replied. Hmmm I don't have this scope but I do have the prostaff, buckmaster, and then the monarch. They all work great! The monarch is my favorite by far because the POI etched in the glass fills the whole scope, the prostaff and buckmaster does not. They work well and hit targets out to 600 yards as advertised.
Now the m-308 – i wouldn't care for it because it's tailored to just one bullet. You can't shoot other bullets with it unless you don't mind not having round and even numbers (200,300,400,500yrds etc). Currently, I have a zeiss 800 reticle and let me tell you, this reticle fits the bill for any and all ammo extremely well. It's by far my favorite BDC scope.

I have owned a T3 Varmint in 308 for about 8 years now. It has a Burris Fullfield II on it currently but it is a 3-9 power scope and I want something with more power that is tailored for this bullet. I have been happy with this gun thus far but in order for it to really “stretch its legs” I need to get something that is in that 15-16 power range for sure. I like the idea of Nikon's Spot On technology that goes with the BDC reticle. Has anyone on here had any experience with using this technology? I like the bang for the buck pricing on the M308 as well. However, I'd certainly be open to any suggestions on comparably priced scopes that have similar features.

I have the T3 Lite SS and mounted the Nikon Prostaff 3-9X40mm with the BDC reticle but using Leupold mounts. Zero has remained steady and groups are excellent with Berger VLD hybrids. That deer in the picture is one result.
I have been considering the M308 for a semiauto Armalite carbine, but not for a hunting rifle. Also, the BDC spot-on is good, but consider the nifty Strelok Plus that app that has a lot more reticles and a lot more choices for projectiles….it is an app for Android and iPhone that you can take with you or print out easily. I printed some cheat sheets and pinned them to another rifle with a different reticle so I could keep things straight. (at my age, can not get the hang of mrads etc)

I use the M223 on my T3 223 Lite…the scope is great with Hornady 55gr Vmax, and better yet with a 60gr Nosler hand load that works with the turret calibrations. Its true out to 600yrs, just dial and shoot.
The quality of Nikons “M” line is pretty good. I don't regret purchasing the scope at all.

Thanks guys for the info. If I decide to go with the M308 scope what rings and base do you recommend? I want something durable that holds the scope securely but also the will give me the proper stock weld. Thanks “alseg” for the info on the other ballistics app. I'll have to check that out.

Some folks like the included scope mounts. Others vehemently dislike them. On my T3 lite SS 308,
I opted to follow the advice of an experienced 'smith and used Leupold bases and rings.
On heavier rifles (Sendero 300WM, 7RemMag, etc) I have used a Pic Rail with 20 moa tilt by Evolution gun works and heavier rings such as EGW or Talley etc, but these had bigger scopes and were used for longer ranges with heavier bullets. I have no experience with the included Tikka mounts. -
Alseg's advice is spot on…
I have MT or EGW rails on all my guns and in the last year have switched to Leupold PRW rings…
Its the best holding ring I have tested for its price point of around $75.00 and will be buying these for all future rifles. Its a great all steel design that keeps the scope where you want it. Pretty sure you could use a “Low” set with the M308 42mm Objective and any combination of a EGW or MT base from the boys here.
http://www.leupold.com/hunting-shooting/mounting-systems/prw-mounting-systems/prw-1-in-low/I went through 2 sets of good big brand name rings on my 300wsm before a Leupold die-hard buddy of mine told me to give them a shot. Sometimes the PRW rings get a bad report because guys scratch their scopes putting them on but that its not the rings, its the installer.

One thing you have to realize with a the BDC version of this scope and program (I have a lot of experience with the “M” Nikoplex and Prostaff5 4.5 – 14 BDC) is that even though Nikon has promoted the hell out of it…it's not has accurate as a cross hair reticle / turret setup,… its a struggle to make “accurate” shots beyond 500yrds using the BDC circles. Its a great 100-500yrd hunting scope but its terrible for target shooting anything past this distance…I own and use both versions and the Nikoplex is the way to go if you want to buy 1 scope to do both jobs for hunting and long range target shooting.
