New Tikka Super Varmint
Posted by yukonal on December 29, 2011 at 12:42 amI'll give my own review of this rifle.
I inquired about this rifle to Jason, and he found what we believe to have been the last NEW available one for sale in the country. I bought it, and got it just in time to put it under the X-Mas tree!
Today was barrel break-in day. I shot some 75 gr A-Max's and 55 gr Ballistic Tips, both loaded with Varget. Both bullets had a load that shot in the 4's, and 26.0 gr Varget, and 55 NBT's shot 4 into .200″–with the 5th putting it right at .405″
The barrel broke in right at shot #19, and after brushing out powder fouling after 3 wet patches, no more copper fouling. Good 'ol Sako barrel didn't let me down. Foulers, oil shots, and dry shots right after cleaning, all went into the group. Nothing wild going 1/2″ outside the group as a fouler. That makes shooting nice. It took me 4 hours to shoot 35 shots–so I'm thinking my meticulous break-in procedure is paying off.
What a pleasant rifle to shoot. Now to load up some of these 69 gr Sierra HPBT Match… 😉

Al,
What caliber and twist is your Super Varmint? Have you been shooting it much ? Care to update your review?

Been shooting it quite a bit. It's a .223, with an 8 twist. Just gets better with age. It holds MOA out to 600 yards, easily. Barrel broke in at shot #19, and has cleaned easy ever since. It'll be fun trying to wear it out…altho I prob never will.
The last 275 shots have all been at 600 yards, and it just seems easy.
As I've said before, I'm shooting 80 gr Bergers, and TAC powder. 8 twist handles the 80's just fine.

Al, Thanks for the reply. My Super Varmint in 222R is the same with respect to getting better with age.

I'm still shooting mine in F/TR Competition at 600 yards. I won the state championship in the Sharp Shooter division last year with my factory Super Varmint.
Throat wore .020 after 700 rounds, and seems to have stabilized. I had it out two days ago and it's still shooting in the 3's at 100.
I put a big BR NightForce on that needed Medium rings for clearance with the 56MM objective, and with the adjustable cheeck piece, 3 notches up gives me good cheek weld. Another season starts tonight…
