New T3 .223 denting spent shells?
Posted by MurrayAnthony on January 4, 2016 at 12:15 amI just purchased a new tikka t3 hunter .223 and I noticed that the top of every shot shell is dented into a D shape after shot is this normal or should I be worried? See image attached

Is it possible your brass is hitting your scope mount or an accessory? My T3 doesn't seem to do anything to fired brass.
I did turn my scope mount around on the pic rail so the bolts would not interfere with single loading.

Hi are the shells ejecting and bouncing on the floor, if not it will be what young Eric has said , I always pull the bolt back slowly and catch the shell has it comes out , but that's off a bench or the floor ,

Hi, no the scope mounts are well clear of the ejection port. And even if I release the bolt as slow as I possible can so that the shot shell doesn't get flung out and I take it out with my hand its still dented into a D shape?

I´d let the dealer/Tikka deal with that one. After all – it´s a new Rifle.

Isnt this a natural phenomenon? I see it often. Never thought much of it.

It must be just the power of the ejector plunger bashing the case mouth against the inside of the action as it clears the chamber, what brand of brass is it, does it do it with different brands? May be just softer than usual brass, but either way I would not be worried about it , your reloading dies will correct it anyway.

My only bolt rifle now is my Tikka T3 Varminter in .223. I don't see any deforming of the case mouths, regardless of how I eject the brass. I can't understand how the brass could be deformed, when he gently retracts the bolt.

Dan hit the nail…
It's normal, don't worry about it. You'll need to keep the expander button installed in your reloading sizing die.

Hi , tried the hornady 55grain vmax much better groups, less than 1 inch. Still denting the shot shells into the D shape and now it won't eject the shot shells either? They just end up sitting in the receiver, any taughts?

you may try to draw the bolt back smartly so the case clears the ejection port. I would hesitate to lighten the ejector spring because of concerns with ejection reliability. This is a legitimate problem in regards to brass life and perhaps concentricity. There are expander buttons that are tapered (often used in upsizing necks like when forming wildcat cases), and those would be preferable to a short stubby expander.
