New Member with a SS Tikka 22-250 Lite and Redfeild 3x9x50
Posted by ArcticWight on November 5, 2015 at 4:32 pmHi Guys
My first post here and i am sure not my last so i live in The Arctic Iqaluit,Nunavut,Canada
and i have bought a used Tikka 22-250 SS Lite and purchased a new Redfeild 3x9x50 scope with Burris Grand slam rings, and weaver 2 PC bases. My question is when sighting in my rifle at 100yards i shoot a fowling shot and it goes where it wants too? and then let barrel cool a couple Min's and i can shoot 2 bullets touching each other but than the 3rd shot will either miss the target all together or be 5 inches left right or up and down no particular pattern? i have checked the rings are tight and bases as well action screws are tight, checked the barrel for straightness it isn't bent from what i can tell looking at rifling and a light the rifling looks concentric now i have cleaned it and cleaned it it is very shiny almost looking brand new in barrel i have taken the gun apart and noticed the recoil lug is a little damaged but surly not from recoil? maybe over tightening the screws? please help it doesent matter what i do trying to hit bullseye at 100yards dead on so that i can set it for 3.5inch above bull for hunting here mostly seal hunting out of a boat i need help very frustrating chasing bullets. I will post pics of targets later and of the recoil lug. Also do my sighting in with no wind maybe 3 or 4 km an hr.Thanks for any helpEricbc7 replied 10 years, 6 months ago 4 Members · 8 Replies -

Hi welcome. Step 1 replace the recoil lug with a st/st one , second make sure the barrel is not touching the stock at any point

Hey don't worry, welcome to the site!
Ok first the wild pattern is not likely from the dented recoil lug. That is not to say that the lug is faultless.
Ok let's nail down the details
You have a used 22-250 tikka and are having dificulty sighting it in.
I don't recall the twist on the T3 22-250 but it is 1:12 I bet
That means you can stabilize the 45-55 gr bullets.
If the rifle is new or not much fired you can develop loads like any new rifle.
Find serious loading help to get the primary load for this particular rifle.

Thanks Ericbc7
I have tried a few different Factory ammo Hornady Performance in 50gr, Remington 55gr,and Winchester 55gr Varmint X the hornadys gave me better results if i remember correctly 😮 Hand loading up here in Arctic is pretty expensive due to all things need to be Shipped here, and the Dangerous goods cost etc etc i would like to try my hand at Hand loading but wont be any time soon. Will see how free floating the barrel worked next time out i also have bought a new scope to rule out a bad scope. Thanks for any advice, Is it possible that the throat is wore out on it?

Hi Guys
Well it seems that the sanding of the pressure pads on stock and totally free floating the barrel about an 1/8th of an inch either side of barrel did the trick went out today and after shooting from 50yds to sight in 3 shots bottom right i went back to a hundred yds and am now putting 3 shots dead center if you look close the 3rd shot went through same hole as it is a little bit bigger than the normal holes i thought i had missed totally until i looked hard at target 8) and 4th one was my fault as i pulled the shot it went right and High so thanks for all the help i appreciate it lots as i almost gave up and sold it but i am glad that i did not.

I've also had the same issue. Except the first will fly where it wants and then two will be touching. Next shot has a mind of its own again.
Sanding down the stock to allow actual free floating fixed it, but i also changed to high quality mounts and scopes at the same time so i can't say for sure what did the trick.
Sounds like the free floating part of these rifles can be slightly hit and miss. Just as well its a cheap and easy fix!

Sorry my last advice was a bit pedantic. Larkin is very reliable, and I missed the “floating” issue.
