New member and cleaning question!
Posted by TikkaBC on December 27, 2015 at 4:17 amHi all!
I'm the proud new owner of a Tikka T3 Lite in .308 Win, and I'm glad to have stumbled across this forum. (Next pay period I'll be picking up a OEM bottom metal piece from Tikka Performance).
I do have a cleaning question (hopefully this is the right forum). I bought a Tipton carbon fiber rod (.30 cal), a Tipton brass jag (.30 cal), and a bag of .30 cal patches for my new rifle – however when I ran these through the bore guide and into the bore, it got stuck. I tried multiple times – no luck! The set-up, despite having all the correct sizes, is too big for my Tikka. I have the same set-up for my .22lr (except with all the other correct .22 sizes), and I have absolutely no problems with it. In fact, to finish the Tikka clean I ended up putting two .22 patches on my .30 cal jag for each pass through.
Has anyone else had this problem? I'm not a huge fan of the punch-through jags, and was thinking of getting a Parker Hale style jag, but I'm not sure if the Dewey jags fit on a Tipton rod. Also I'm not sure if this will solve the problem that I've run into.
Thanks for all the help!

These are what I've been using since my smith put one down my freshly cleaned barrel and it came out dirtier than I care to admit. Screw them down tighter to the base of the adapter, and they flare out a little. Don't screw them down hardly at all (my smith machined off about half of the threading on the adapter) and they're fairly small. If you get the super intensive ones that have intwerwoven brass fibers, you don't even have to change rod tips, just pellet types.

I use old 5.56mm brushes with small cleaning patches rolled around them on my 300 WM. Two patches gives a loose fit and three gives a tight fit. I strongly recommend a bore guide to align everything and prevent solvents getting into the action and mag well.

While I have used jags, I like slotted patch holders. One 30 cal patch shouldn't jam up the works.

First I'd check if I have the correct patches, or buy some more preferable another make , then make sure you are only using one at a time and that there not sticking together , then measure the rod and check / contact the manufacturer as mistake happen

I often trim my patches, I cut them in diamond shape or star shaped. Take the square patch and starting at one of the flats, cut a triangle piece of cloth out of the patch on all four flats. Vary the size until you get a tight fit that works for you. The jag won't matter, just put the point at center.

For my 300 winmag, I had to cut the square patches down to about 1 1/2 – 1 5/8″ squares, then they work good.
I generally use the smaller patches on the first pass to really soak the barrel, the slightly larger on the last couple dry patches.

Those VFG felts are really good. I use them on all my weapons. I have that same adapter from Brownells but i don´t especially like it so it hardly gets used. I use the VFG OEM adapter instead : http://www.waffenpflege.de/en/products-cleaners/rifles-and-handguns/adaptor.html
