My first semi-custom. M695 25-06
Posted by nimrod1203 on September 9, 2011 at 8:36 pm
Here is my first semi-custom. It started life as a m695 .270. I had it re-barreled with a 26″ shillen match stainless barrel, fluted barrel and bolt. The bolt has straight flutes with black inlays. The barreled action is black duracoated to match. The bolt handle is also coated. The stock thats on it now is just the stocker thats been painted by me, but i have a Mcmillan sako hunter on order. It should be in about the end of october which will complete the rifle. The trigger is a clean 2 lbs. The scope is a Vortex Viper hs 4-16×50. EGW picatinny 20 MOA rail. Thats it in a nutshell.

Wow, thanks for all the support on my first custom build……seems like most people like the T3s better…..

I think most people have more experience with the T3s. Most have not seen the custom L61s that were used in benchrest competition.
Did you rechamber it to a different caliber? How does the Shilen shoot?

Very nice,
My first experience with a Tikka was with a 695 7mm Rem Mag. Are you getting >3200 fps with that barrel length? BTW, 25-06 is an awesome round. I think a future project for me would be a heavy barrel 26″ for my standard 25-06. Who did the work for you?

It started life as a .270 win and since i already had a remington 700 that shot <1/2" groups in a .270 i decided to have a bit of fun. by staying with the 06 family, i kept all feeding issues and bolt work at bay. The work was done by Randy's custom rifles and rebarreling in Wyoming. From the day i sent it off, to the day it arrived on my doorstep was 19 days. It was supposed to be a 26" barrel but the actual finished length is 25 and some change. I'm looking to shoot the 115 Combined Tech bullets out of it and hoping for 3100. As far as the shooting part, i've not got to shoot it yet. Long story short, i have asked numerous people for permision to shoot and was told they'd rather not. So i'm joining the shooting range, but thats taken 3 weeks to get approved. I should be shooting by this weekend. I'll tell you, this thing is smooth as butter. and he polished the trigger to right at 2# and it's amazing. I was in the air on the 6.5x284 but i made this so my wife could shoot a gun that wouldn't kick, and i'd have in my mind the ultimate long range varmint and antelope gun.

Nice gun, I have never owned any of the older Tikkas, but may in the future.

Well i finally got to the range today, and got some rounds down range. It wasn't a great day to shoot. 60 degrees, 15-20 MPH winds that gusted to 30. No rear rest for support, and a low table all made it very unstable to shoot off of. These were the #2,3, and 4 shots out of my barrel during “break in” cleaning between each shot. The ammo was Hornady el-cheapo 117 gr. soft points. Overall i'm really happy with the results. I shot a string after these and put the first three touching, then i threw the last one about 3/4″ to the left. I'm convinced with a better rest, and not as much wind, it'll be a 1/4″ gun…..
