magazine problems
Posted by PaTikka lover on November 25, 2015 at 3:08 pmI just finished my T3 hunter makeover from 222 to 17 Remington Fireball I'm still doing barrel breakin and so far results are great with factory ammo. my problem is the mag won't feed that short round. When the bolt slides to the round the cartridge nose flips up in the air before it gets to the chamber. my guess is the short length of the 17 fireball is to blame. Does anyone have any suggestions? I really need some help.

When you chamber a round from the magazine, does the bolt hold the back end of the cartridge down? It seems if it's just pushing it along it should pop free of the feed lips and move upwards.

Thanks for your reply. It seems because of the short round ( about 3/8″ shorter than 222) the front of round pops up before it reaches the chamber. I don't think the bolt is holding it down, however I will very slowly move bolt along to see exactly what is going on. Thanks again for your comments.

Magazines can be tricky, you may need to increase your spring pressure or change how it bears on the follower. you could try reversing the spring or changing the follower shape. Perhaps 3-D print a new follower with a thicker tail.
Just brain storming, good luck!

It's been awhile since I posted this problem. I've worked on the magazine. I cut the length of the follower by 5/16 added a 5/16 piece of poly to the mag housing and re-configured the spring. I've been able to chamber 3 rounds but not consistently. adusted spring tension and will work for a few cycles I can chamber 2 rounds consistently. I tried chambering 222 rounds before modifying mag and they didn't chamber properly either. By the way this was a rebarrel from 222 remington to a 17 remington fireball all parts were brand new and rifle was never fired before rebarrel. I'm thinking of trying to modify a AR 223 mag spring as I think I can obtain more consistent tension once I find the sweet spot. Bolt is addressing rounds properly and extractor is working well. Any thoughts?
