Loading Results for T3 Varmint in 22-250
Posted by ShtrRdy on March 31, 2012 at 5:59 pmI'm going to start a thread to capture the results I obtain from developing a load for my Tikka T3 Varmint in 22-250.
So far all groups I have shot have been under an inch at 100yds. My goal is to find a combination which will provide groups at or under 3 tenths of an inch with good velocity. I don't know if it is possible, but we will see. I would like to use a powder that is less temperature sensitive. So for starters, I'm going to try some of the Hodgdon “Extreme” products.
I started this rifle's life by going through a barrel break in process. First by firing one shot and cleaning for the first 10 shots. Then firing three shots and cleaning for 3 groups of 3 shots. Then firing 2 groups of 5 shots and clean.
I have a Nikon Monarch 4-16x42SF scope mounted in the rings that came with the rifle.
The twist rate on this barrel is 1 in 14″. Therefore I think I need to use bullets which are 55 gr or less. Please correct me if I'm wrong on this.

First load tried was with a Sierra 50 gr BlitzKing bullet on top of Hodgdon Varget powder.
The two groups on the top are close to my target group size but the velocity will be a bit lower.

The second load tried was with the Sierra 55 gr HPBT “GameKing” bullet on top of Hodgdon Varget Powder.
While all these groups were under an inch it didn't seem like any of them were going to collapse.

I've got some 52 gr HPBT “Matchking” Sierra bullets I can try. Do you have a recommended OAL?

So far I've been trying bullets I have around from dabbling with a .223. My most recent trial is with a Sierra 55 gr Blitzking. The brass I use was some I had primed sometime in the past. They have CCI BR-2 primers in Winchester brass.
This was the first outing that I ended up with a group larger than 1 inch.
I need to settle in on one brand of brass, primer, and seating depth. Although it seems at this time I'm just trying to find a combination that pulls the shots together.

I finally got out to shoot the Sierra 52 gr HPBT “matchking”.
For my next step, I'm going to try some of the better loads, like the 55 gr HPBT “gameking”, and the 50 gr “Blitzking”. This will give me a chance to check my technique.

I came back to this forum looking for action screw torque recommendation and found this old thread. I ended up using Varget behind a 55 gr Blitzking. More recently I’ve realized this barrel is on its last shots. It fouls terribly so I can only get a few good groups before they open up.
