Hunting Scope
Posted by msbillybadass on July 1, 2015 at 5:41 pmHello Everyone!
I just bought my first Tikka T3 Lite 270. I need to get a scope for it for this years upcoming hunting season. Optics are a new world for me so I'm looking for a little help. I'm looking for something under 500 bucks that I can hunt deer and elk with from 100-300 yards. 500$ is a stretch and of course would like to go cheaper… but that's about my limit. I believe I'm looking for something in the 4-14×40 area so my real question is brand. I have a 3×9 Leupold on my 7mag but that's as deep as my optics world has gone. I've been told that I should typically spend as much on a scope as I did on the rifle…. which isn't really an option for me.
So the question is…..good brand, fair price, big game scope out to 300 yds (but that's stretching it).
Thank you!

Hi for your budget have a look at Vortex or the NEW Minox range there a great improvement on the old ones , if money was no object for hunting it would have to be a Zeiss V8

Out to 300 yds your 3-9x Leupold would do fine.
4-14x would be a good choice too if you don't hunt thick timber.

I've hunted with and also used this scope for target shooting. Sold it to a guy who now has it mounted on his Tikka 30-06 for all his hunting…highly recommend it for both hunting and target shooting if you are on a budget and looking for 1 scope to do everything for well under $500….I've seen them going for as low as $300.00…

Glass is GREAT! We've shot and compared this scope side by side to both of my Vortex HSLR's and glass is pretty much on par, can't really tell a difference..Guys will chirp a lot of crap about Nikon but I can't see how they are being honest if they have actually used this scope in the field. The added “extra” set of high MOA turrets and caps makes it a super deal!
My buddy has this scope mounted on his Browning Bar 270 for hunting…Great scope for quick close shots on 2.5 power in the bush… Very nice and a deadly combo on our deer hunts!

When you get better scopes the glass improves greatly on the light transmission front letting you to shoot in very low light conditions at the beginning and at the end of the day , when a lot of the game is about , if you really want to see what good glass is have a look through a S & B pm 11 , I thought my night force was good but when you look through the S & B its in a different class , and when I was shooting my Ar 15 which has a S & B Zenith 1 x 6 hunting scope on , the ability to catch the light was amazing, with the naked eye I could only just see the target through the darkness , but through the scope it was easy to see it

Larkin, Those scopes are beauties! I'm very jealous…I've only had the pleasure of looking through one at the range. And its not very often you see them in my neck of the woods.

That's one of the main disadvantages of forums you don't know what people has available in there country or the personal circumstances, and the written word has a hard edge

Thank you everyone for all of your help! I've been stuck between the vote crossfire and the viper. The viper being the more costly. I will definitely look into the nikons as well. Stoked I joined this forum. Thanks again.

You are not going to get excellent glass at that price point , you might get ok glass , for the best glass you need to be looking at a European manufacturer
