How easy is it to remove the barrel in a T3
Posted by abso on October 24, 2015 at 6:37 pmI've found someone to thread my barrel locally and I'm wondering how easy it is to remove the barrel. They said to bring just the barrel and that they charge for disassembly/assembly that I'd like to do myself if possible. I also suppose I didn't ask if I can leave the action on the barrel, so maybe its unnecessary.
I haven't found any instructions on how to do this yet, any pointers would be appreciated. Also, will it be required to check head space again if its properly reassembled?
Thanks!

You should have a barrel vice and an action wrench to do this job. Usually it's the gunsmith that has this type of equipment. If you try to remove the barrel with the vice in your garage and a pipe wrench you'll likely ruin the action.

I second that Chad at LRI has just rebarelled my T3 and he told me that they are all screwed on extremely tightly and are far harder to get off than anything else he's worked on. Don't risk it – you will damage the action and barrel if you try. If your 'smith won't do it, speak to Chad. As an aside, Chad also told me that all the T3 actions he's worked on were straight and didn't need truing. Headspace will be fine if you have the same barrel screwed back on. Why not get a recoil lug fitted at the same time? Chad will do that, and so do the guys on here.

If the smiths lathe has a large enough spindle bore then the muzzle can be threaded with the action on, I have removed a couple of T3 barrels using a barrel vice and action wrench and didn't find it difficult so if your smith has to do it it shouldnt be a big deal/cost.

I have removed several, and every one has been dang hard coming off. They are on very tight and also have a thread locker on them. I first heat the barrel directly in front of the action loosen the lock Tite. I then set it up in the lathe and do a relief cut in front of the action. Then put it in a barrel vice to screw it off. Even with this done, some of them are still a bit of a challenge.

I have a custom made wrench that EXACTLY fits over the action, with a 2' handle…all steel.
Tighten the barrel down in a barrel vise, put the wrench on…and give it one good pop. Saves cutting and ruining the barrel, and you can then sell it for a few bucks.
I've popped 8 barrels off, no sweat.

ANyway you can share the specs on your action wrench? I would like to have one built.
