Fun shooting at steel
Posted by SRW on October 12, 2015 at 1:57 amI went out a couple weeks ago to a private range with steel plates to 800 yards with a friend that is a competition long range shooter. He got me on steel at 800 and everything in between with my T3 300wm shooting 180 grain Hornady SSTs that he developed and loaded for my gun. I got this video of my shooting a spinner target at 300 yards, http://youtu.be/aC1RzOepC8Y.
This is me with his custom .308 on the same target, http://youtu.be/d9scZzDncpA.
This is him shooting from 200 – 700 yards without adjusting his scope, just holding over in his reticle, http://youtu.be/c8xhLvGQfnQ.
I love my gun but it needs a brake on it. I was in pain at the end of the day.

Good stuff. I'm building up a .300 Win Mag and have a steel gong waiting for it. When I last shot with the factory barrel and no brake it felt like I was being kicked by a mule every shot. It's having a custom brake fitted now.
Look for Terminator Products T3 titanium brakes as they are superb and will calm the recoil hugely. They are made in NZ, but sold in the US here:

Do you mind sharing your 300 Win Mag load using the 180 gr SST?
-
I would if I knew it but he's the magician, I just point and shoot. I know the velocity is around 2950 fps.
-
Have you guys tried the limbsaver? Made a huge difference on my 270 win. Pushes instead of kick.
-
Yes, that was the first thing I changed on this gun, then the recoil lug. I can only handle about 10-12 rounds on the bench and 25 or so shooting prone. The limbs aver made a huge improvement but it's still a 300 WM pushing 180 grain bullets almost 3000 fps.

Hi I'm trying to get out to shoot some steel out to 1000 yard + the only problem is over here in England to shoot over land and not at a 'target ' range ' I need to get a hunting license added onto my target license, strange I know I can have a license for target shooting at a range but not over land that's not approve range for target , but it's ok if I get a hunting license even though I'm only shooting steel,

Larkin, do you have Crown Land in England? We do here and we are free to camp, fish, hunt, hike and target shoot (with appropriate licenses of course).

Hi are you trying to wind me up lol , the answer is we have crown land but none of the rights you have

Where do you live Larkin? Bisley, Barton Road Range, Warminster etc could be an option. You may have already scoped those options, but if not, there are clubs that can get access.

Hi I'm up in Yorkshire, the range I'm hoping to go to WMS in Wales, hope to speak to a couple of people over the next few weeks that might/ hopeful/ should be able to take me out on an shoot and give me a written report on my safety

Yorkshire to Wales is a long way mate. Are there any clubs that have access to Catterick ranges? Much close for you and options for 600m or so from memory. If you can't locate any, speak to Range Control at Wathgill Camp for advice. Good luck.

Hi there is diggle range near by but there up on the moors , but there limited to about 1000 yards , and I'm looking for up to 1500 , also if I'm of to Wales I'd have to make it a full weekend away from home ( if you know what I mean lol)
