Frustrated with Tikka’s Focus on the 8" twist in the 223!
Posted by K22 on October 11, 2016 at 1:27 amI see the new T3X 223 is only being made in the 8″ twist. Why such a fast twist for a hunting rifle in a varmint caliber when the 12″ is ideal for the 50 and 55 grain bullets?

I don't know the answer but I would guess it's because people have been wanting a faster twist in the .223 so they could use heavier bullets. That usually gets you a higher BC and therefore less wind drift.

The 8-twist in the tikka 223 has been proven to stabilize everything from 40-80.5gr projectiles without sacrificing too much speed with the lighter pills…I've always thought a 10-12 twist was ideal in a 223 as well but that was before I started realizing the 8 twist will stabilize just about any round you can buy off the self for short to long range shooting. Something you can't do with a 10 or 12 twist.
The 8 twist has also proven to be a hand loaders dream with the T3… -

The 8 twist has also proven to be a hand loaders dream with the T3…Have you shot 50 0r 55 grain bullets in an 8″ twist? Would be interested in hearing what kind of groups you achieved and if you reload, what bullets and powder you used. Thanks.
PS: I waited too long to get the T3 Lite at the local gun store, it had a 10″ twist. When I finally go the money together to purchase it they were sold out and told me that they could only get the new T3X which only comes in an 8″ twist – reason for my frustration – he who hesitate is lost 🙁

I would trade you my Tikka Lite 1:10 for a 1:8 any day.

Why?

because the heavier bullets I've been able to shoot accurately are the 69 gr SMK. I would love to shoot the 75/77 grainers.

And of course it´s made in the 12″ twist as well. Whether Sako NA imports them is Another matter.
That said my T3 SV with its 12″ twist and 600mm/24″ barrel shoots all 55gr just fine. Never tried them 50 grainers though.
I usually shoot either 69 or 77 gr bullets in mine since this particular rifle is my “target” gun.
And it does shoot those superbly well. A couple of 5-shotters shot at 200 meters on a windy day :The CC is under 1/2″ on both targets. The targets are Intern. 50 M Rimfire targets.

I have been lobbying for 1:8 twist for 3 years! I spent over $800 more than needed on a T3 Sporter just bucause it had a 1:8 twist.
Do not encourage Berreta to import slow twist .223's please!
If you want to shoot 45 gr pills be my guest, but please don't imagine that slow twist is good for anyone I know! -

I shoot 50 and 55 grain bullets which are idea for varmint hunting. The 12″ twist is ideal for these weight bullets. If I wanted a target rifle it wouldn't be a light weight sporter which is most suited for hunting. No, problem, I brought a Browning X Bolt, 223, Stalker with a 12″ twist. I'm happy. Shoots like a dream with reloads.

K22, I hear what your saying
Certainly the 10 or 12 twist in the .223 fit with certain consumers.
I apologise for assuming that folks will like the fast twist simply because I like the option to shoot the heavier bullets. I would like to point out that a fast twist is more flexible than a slower one. For example, if tikka did an 8 twist on their 22-250 I would buy one tomorrow. The 75 gr. Pills at over 3k are dynamite on any coyotes. But for prairie dogs maybe 50 gr bullets at near 4K is better. My preferance is always gonna be for fast twist I guess. -

Same here indeed! Can't see any reason to have a slow twist barrel on a .223 – nor do i see a reason in any Browning:) 🙂

As dog posted long ago – check out Nevada shooting you tubes with specific search for .223. That guy hit a gal jug on first shot with a 75 gr a-max using a Tika T3 light

1000yrds…!

This is the same load (only different is I use Hornady brass) that I have shot and verified to be MOA or sub MOA out of my 223 – 8 twist Varmint. Shoots almost as well in my 223 – 8 twist lite as well…
I have personally shot this load out to 900yrds on 12″ target under good conditions with consecutive hits in a 6″ ring… -

Just yanking your chain 🙂
Good shooting. And once again : I see no reason, whatsoever, to choose the 1/12″ rifling afore the 1/8″.
