Failure to fire
Posted by setterman on August 30, 2014 at 6:37 pmI recently traded into a lightly used 25-06 Stnls lam.
I was very pleased until I reached the range. Tried several of my fl sized rounds and got clicks, purchased a box of commercial rounds and got more of the same. Since it clicks, I assume it's cocking. Also, there are hits on the primer, but they barely leave a dimple.
Suggestions?
Thanks,
Bob

A couple things to check.
1. Take the bolt apart and see if the Mainspring is broken. There's a video on how to do this in the gunsmithing section. https://tikkashooters.com/public_html/gunsmithing/bolt-disassembly-video/
2. With the bolt out of the gun, by hand, rotate the cocking piece so that the firing pin is protruding from the front of the bolt. Measure how much it's sticking out.
Let us know what you find out.

Managed to remove shroud, remove bolt handle, remove mainspring, inspect and lube. Currently having difficulty reinserting bolt handle.
Why , ( how) does that guy in the video make it look so easy ?

Does your Mainspring, (firing pin spring), and Firing Pin look okay?
The handle should basically slip right in. Take a close look to see what's not lining up.

Mainspring and firing pin are fine.
For whatever reason, I can't get that mainspring in deep enough for the handle to clear.
I assume the flat spot on the main spring shaft is supposed to show in the slot where the handle is inserted.
I can't seem to get that spring and shaft in the bolt deep enough so the handle snugs in.
I'm only very slightly off, but it's enough.

could you send me a picture of what you're dealing with? I'll take mine apart and see if I can spot any differences? – Todd

Guys:
Thanks for the suggestions. The bolt is now reassembled.
Unfortunately, this seems to be a trouble shooting venture, as the rifle still will not fire. The primer hits are too light to provide ignition.
Any other suggestions? Trigger?
Thanks again,
Bob

Hi Bob
I would love to know what the problem was as I have the opposite problem with the firing pin holing primers because it's coming out to far

Pete – have you tried taking your bolt apart to see if you can spot anything unusual? – Todd

Hi Todd
Yep took it apart but everything looks good. I have re faced the end of the bolt by 20Thou and it now shoots fine. I've put about 100 rounds through since and no holed primers at all (before it would hole every round). We measured a few T3 firing pins and most came out the bolt about 54 thou mine came out 84 thou!
It does puzzle me why it shot 1000s of round before this happened -

I'm glad you solved your problem, but am curious what you did to fix it. Could you explain what you mean by “re faced” 20 thou? Does this mean you added material to the bolt face?
I also have a general question re. your long firing pin protrusion- am I correctly understanding that the fireing pin stops forward travel when the shoulder of the pin strikes the back of the bolt face? If so, then how could a fireing pin protrude more over time unless the back of the bolt face was eroding?Anyway thanks for the puzzle !

The stop for the firing pin is not the back of the bolt face but right up the other end of the bolt. My firing pin was protruding 84 thou and my other Tikkas were 54 thou so we machined 20 thou off the end. It now shoots fine and doesn't hole primers.
I have know idea how it became longer or if it was when new. Its done thousands of rounds and been re barrelled once. It only started holing primers after it was re barrelled
