Digiscopeing with an I-Phone
Posted by Ericbc7 on April 29, 2016 at 3:54 amI have a buddy that lost his sight in his right eye back in college. He has never been able to learn to shoot lefty. I am working on setting up a digiscopeing mount that can use an I-Phone with a scope that mounts on a pic rail. Anyone have an idea that might work on a hard recoiling (30-06) gun?
I have some ideas but am keen to get some input.

Hey Eric,
I have an “Iscope” that I use with my 300wsm directly on the scope, I just move the scope forward…if you have room to move your scope forward I can't see any reason why it wouldn't work for you too.
Works pretty well once you get it setup, I do recommend wrapping your scope in electrical tape or something similar where it attaches…The design works well being directly attached to the scope under recoil, don't think you will find a side mounted design that will hold up to anything larger then a 223 caliber…This is the best one on the market right now in my opinion…http://www.g-line.net…Might not be the exact thing you are looking for but it does work very well.

Hi dog, I saw that one and saw its potential. I will explore my concept of a side mounted pick rail mount for a bit and if it works, will post the info for all to see. I wish I had a cnc or lath to play with!

Looking forward to seeing what you come up with.
Me and few buddies played around with a similar project a few years ago. We didn't have a mill available so we used the widest (3 screw) scope ring we could find… then we cut / grinded down (removed the seat / channel) where the scope would sit) and then tig welded a flat bracket to it. All this fit snuggly underneath a scope using medium to high rings. After some sanding and painting it looked great. Then we used a case similar to an Outer box setup that screw mounted directly to a vertical bracket we made….recoil wasn't an issue but you would jump off the target and have to re-aquire it again with larger calibers.
The biggest disadvantage we found in trying to work with a side mount aiming camera was the constant “extreme” adjustment needed at different ranges, using it as a camera to “view” the target and using it as an “aiming” device are two completely different scenarios …even a few yards difference would make the POA shift alot, the 4-6″ side offset from the bore made adjusts at different ranges really difficult as opposed to normal scope elevation adjustments…in the end that ultimately killed the project for us. Later on we went to the in line scope mounting solutions where there are no camera adjustments, only scope adjustments like any other day at the range.
The side setup worked great for a target cam though….basically we made exactly what you see in the 2 attached photos….you can now buy everything we made in our garage years ago.
