CTR Scope Rail Removal…
Posted by Dog Down on June 17, 2015 at 10:51 pmSome guys are having trouble with this so I figured I'd post pictures and how I do it…
First off, the CTR rail is attached no different then any other rail.
But, some rails may have more glue / thread lock applied then others.STEP 1.
– Remove the 4 screwsSTEP 2.
– Use a rubber hammer to give it a couple taps…
You don't need to be gentle, hit the thing!STEP 3.
– Apply upward pressure from the tang or barrel side of the rail.
Pull straight up so you don't put pressure on the built in recoil lugs (there are 2).STEP 4.
– If it does not release with the first 3 steps you have to use a torch or heat gun to release
the factory glue / thread lock. A torch works best but a heat gun will work but takes far longer.STEP 5.
– Pull the factory recoil lugs.Mine released in seconds with a propane torch, others I've worked on were the same but some needed a little more convincing.
***You will need to give the rail and receiver good cleaning to get the crap off, especially the receiver grooves***.

Wow, this is so helpful! Thanks Dog Down for the clear instructions and pics. I'm going to try this very soon on my CTR>

Thanks for the step by step instructions. Other than those who want a 20 moa rail, is there any reason to replace the oem rail?

Hi one main reason is returning to zero when you take the scope and rings off , a quality rail give you a better chance, as a quality rail is machined to tighter tolerances as factory ones are made with time/ cost restrains

I was able to remove the rail tonight using a 1000F heat gun, moving it slowly around the rail for about 15 minutes. I then used a t-shirt to lift up the rail, which still took some effort. Once the rail started to budget a bit, I simply put my pocket knife underneath the loose end and pried it off easily. Glad this is done. Now I just need to get in the mail the new rail from Mountain Tactical.

Are the recoil pins that are supposed to be pulled out in step 5 the same thing as the recoil lugs?

I've reworded Step 5…hopefully it clears up your question…

I just removed the rail on my new SuperVarmint. Took a fair bit of heat and prying.
To remove the glue residue I tried soaking it in acetone and gun solvent and also heated it a few times, but there was no way it was gonna come off like that. It’s like cement.
I ended up having to use a razor blade and heat, which worked but unfortunately I also scratched off the light cerakote that was on there. That exposed some bare steel now so I’m worried it’s gonna rust on me eventually.
I was wondering if I should mask it off and put one coat of paint on it to prevent rust in the future. I don’t particularly want to take of the rail to clean and oil the receiver under there all the time.
