Cleaning barrel
Posted by Hawaiianstyle on July 28, 2013 at 10:56 pmI've been reading a lot on the forums and notice that everyone is using carbon rods for their barrels. What about Hoppes Bore Snake for cleaning TIKKA barrels? Are they recommended? And did anyone every use Frog Lube to clean and lubricate their TIKKA's?

Hi
I use Frog lube , imho its good stuff and dose every thing its supposed to do , the main reason for me to start using it was that its non toxic and we have some very curious Flatcoated retrievers running around the house -

Get a good bore guide and a carbon rod and keep it clean…

I don't have a Tikka yet but I have many other rifles and ive used all kinds of cleaning rods and bore snakes. if you use a steel cleaning rod that's fine but make sure you use a brass bore guide. plastic rods will work as well and some claim you don't need a bore guide but im not sure what the plastic will do rubbing on the crown all the time. in my AK-74 ive been using nothing but a bore snake to clean the barrel and have done that for years now with great success. to deal with the corrosive 5.45×39 cartridge I wet the loop with denatured alcohol before running the bore snake. the only down side to the bore snake is I don't see it doing much for copper fouling, but for all other cases its great.

For me if I've just went out for a little load testing I'll put a few drops of Rem oil (or similar) on the brush of the Bore Snake and pull it through once or twice and put the gun away. I used to be one of the ones that was a religious cleaner after every range trip. After much reading I've reduced my cleaning (besides general wipe downs) to only when the accuracy of my rifle starts to fall off. This has worked great for MY Tikka and I'll continue to do so.
