Bolt Won’t Close with New Prvi Partizan Ammo
Posted by JackEllis490 on April 4, 2016 at 1:40 amI've got a brand new .243. Sighted it with Hornady American Whitetail 100 grain round sand the bolt worked just fine. Tried Prvi Partizan 90 grain rounds today and the bolt won't close easily. There are lots of posts on other forums about reloaded ammo that causes this problem but nothing about factory ammo.
I don't have machinist's calipers to measure overall length but according to a cheap set of woodworking calipers that measures in hundredths of an inch, the Prvi is 2.60 and the Hornady is 2.583. Base diameter is .468 for both. Primers appear to be recessed .02.-03 from the base.
Strange that the bolt closes with one manufacturer's factory load but not with the other. Any idea what to check next?
I'm also going to get in touch with the ammo vendor and Prvi.

Curious problem, I think your correct to measure properly. I have had no problems with Tikka .243 factory loads.

Prvi Partizan is Yugoslavian (or ex Yugo – don´t know from what “State” the Partizan comes from) crap ammo so most probably there´s something weird with the ammo itself.

Howdy,
Same problem here with Privi .308…… Problem is the headspace distance is too long…
(Back of rim to shoulder)
Measured several cartridges, they're several thou too long…
They will barely close in a Ruger GSR, but not in my CTR that is approx. .002 shorter..
Don't force it, you may gall your bolt lugs..
OTH, I have some Privi .30-30 that works just fine, but as you know, headspaces on the rim…YMMV,
Paul

Exactly! I´d never put that crappy ammo thru any of my rifles. Ever !

Howdy,
Same problem here with Privi .308…… Problem is the headspace distance is too long…
(Back of rim to shoulder)That was very helpful. In my case it looks like the headspace distance is too short. The spec is for .0551 according to a diagram I found on 6mmbr. For ammo that loads properly (bolt closes), the distance appears to be .058. On the one Prvi round I checked it's .053. I'm using (or maybe misusing) an old automotive spark plug feeler gauge but headspace distance on the PRVI rounds appears to be smaller than on the Hornaday or a snapcap that also feeds properly.
I'm going to cycle all the rounds through to see if any of them work. The vendor (not the mfgr) said he's seen this in firearms machined on the tight side of the tolerance and agreed to buy back what won't work.
I'm not sure out-of-spec rounds are confined to less expensive ammo. Someone on another forum reported a similar problem with Hornaday ammo.
Thanks a lot.

Hi at the club I go to its mainly new members firing the clubs guns that use privvy, also used by people who just want to make some noise and not bothered about grouping , but saying that I've see them shoot sub 1 moa in some rifle but that's very rare,

It would be interesting to try this:
If you hand load, neck size only (not full length for this test) and fire the same case 2-3 times, then measure using a headspace gauge. The brass will more closely resemble the chamber dimentions than once fired brass and then compare with the same measurement on your factory ammo. If you can still chamber the fired round, (if headspace is the issue) the problem factory ammo should measure longer.
Regardless, if the dealer will take them back, return them.
Good luck! -

had same in .308 with ppu. Bit tight closing bolt of new rounds. Once fired, trimmed and reloaded the problem went. No problem with other brands.
