Best Elk Round
Posted by George on April 2, 2017 at 1:51 amWhat do you folks think of a 150 or 160 gr being used in my 7mm Rem Mag for Elk ? It won't be long range shot usually under 250 yards.
All help and opinion appreciated.

I shot both a kudu and an oryx with 150 grain Core Lokts out of a .30-06. The good news was, they both died close to where I shot them. The bad news is, each one took three rounds, one of which was in the heart.
I suggest you use a 180 grain round.

I would have to agree with Jack. 180 Grain would be the best. I would also be comfortable shooting an elk with the 165 grain in the Barnes Vor-Tx ammo. It is the copper tripple shock bullet. My T-3 300 Win mag loves them. I can put 3 rounds in the same hole at 100 yards with them. Funny thing is all my other rifles hate them, we are talking like a two inch group.

I have no experience with copper rounds although I plan to start using them this fall with mule deer. Everything I've read suggests they are better than lead if you're within about 300 yards. Too far and they'll be too slow to open up properly. You can use a lighter weight bullet (150 grain ought to be GTG for elk) for a slightly flatter trajectory and you get the lead out of your diet to boot. YMMV.

Barnes TTSX or The Federal Trophy Copper have done really well for me and the boys on Whitetails, Mulies and even Moose and Black Bear at close ranges. DEADLY in the 0-300yrd range, exactly like Jack suggested.
The energy that these projectiles dump into an animal while expanding at close ranges is devastating.
Velocity is key though…don't use it for long range hunting.Barnes TTSX is my go to for 308 & 300wsm when hunting thick bush. If i'm hunting large open valleys and big swamps I'm loaded with 180gr Accubonds or the new Hornady 178gr ELDx…May switch all reloading to ELDx projectiles when I run out of Accubond…they do seem to hold together better.

Norma Vulcan and Lapua Naturalis. Both very popular for Moose/Elk here in Scandinavia.
