Barrel Break in
Posted by rck on August 28, 2013 at 2:36 amHello All
Well first let me say I am new to the Tikka Rifle. I will be able to pick it up in less than a week. I have been reading a lot about breaking in a new barrel, like cleaning it after a couple of rounds and not using a bristlle brush and other stiff. Not knowing this stuff I thought I would ask here. I am probably sure this has already been answered but I could not locate it. I was recommended to this Forum by someone on the CALGUNS Forum.
By the way, it is the Tikka T3 Lite in .308 and from what I have heard I will enjoy it for my first .308Rick

Hi,ja,i would also like someone to tell me how to do that,im waiting for my super varmint 25-06 and I want to be sure its maiden voyage is a good one.
Don't want to damage the barrel with my knowledge, its dangerous.

Hi
I'm doing just this at the moment , on the first five round clean the barrel after every one , then every 5 shots until no fouling is present , it could take 10 shots or 25+ shots ,I'm going to the range tonight to shoot another round of five , so far the barrel has had 10 rounds from me (plus what was shot at tikka and at the proof house )and there already a vast reduction in copper from the first 5 to the last 5 -

I still do it the old school way. Shoot and clean after every shot, for 10 shots. Then shoot and clean after 3 shots, for 3-three shot groups. Then shoot and clean after 5 shots, for 2-five shot groups. You should be pretty good by then.
Use a good bore guide, Butch's Bore Shine, plenty of bronze brushes, and hose the bronze brush out with brake cleaner after every time you're done running it thru the bore.
Be patient, it'll pay off in the long run.

Can't hurt. I've done it with various rifles, and not with others. Depends on my available range time and patience. I had a 300 Ultra that was a copper mine until the 3rd set of five. Then it cleaned up pretty easy after that. I have a T3 in 7 Remmy mag that didn't get the treatment. It got cleaned well after every range trip. Sometimes 5 or 6 shots. Sometimes 10 or more shots a session. That little sweet heart is one of the finest shooting rifles I've ever had the honor of owning. Not a lot of copper fouling. I say if you have the time and ammo it sure isn't a bad thing.

Hi all,
I am purchasing a t3 lite in .223 and was wondering what rate of twist is better. I will be using for a hunting rifle small to mid size game. Any thoughts and reasons for or against the 1:12 or 1:8 twist I would be using factory ammo. And also was wondering what scope would be a good match for mostly 100 300 yard shooting

Hi
here in the uk a .223 8:1 are a factory order (for my super vermint) , and at least 6months , so I went for the 12:1 , I'm just shooting paper so for me it just means choosing ammo under 62g , at the moment I'm have good results with sako 50g gameheads , imo if your going for medium game (give us a clue ie fox )if your medium is bigger than a fox you'll need the 8:1 for larger round if not a larger calibre agin that's just imo
Also it might of been polite to start another thread with your question -

Thank you for the tips yukonal. Can you recommend a bore guide for Tikka T3?

I've been using a Sinclair model for years. I just ordered and received three Lucas bore guides. 2 for two different Tikka's, and 1 for a competition rifle. They are the “best”, and I'm pleased with them.
You can google Mike Lucas, or Lucas bore guide and you'll be directed to him.
Or, do a search on Accurate Shooter, and there is a write-up about them there.
