Any better powder to start with for 300 wsm than H4831sc?
I am going to start reloading for my new T3 Light SST/SYN in 300 WSM and would like to know if there is a powder out there that is likely to give me a better chance of maximum accuracy with 180 grain bullets than H4831sc.
I consider myself fortunate as over 95% of the powders made by Hodgdon, and IMR are available to me OTC. As I am in no rush in my load development I will be buying and trying out one powder at a time until I find which powder my rifle prefers.
I know there are other powders that are likely to be just as good, but what I am asking is, is there A BETTER powder than H4831sc with 180 grain bullets for me to start with.
I would like to try H4350 but it is only presently available by mail and I'm not going to order 8lbs of any powder unless I'm 100% certain it is my best choice. I can easily get H4831sc OTC near me. I'm not going to try RL-17 or VVn550 as both are over $43lb near me OTC.
I have done countless searches on the net and of all the powders for 180 grain bullets there was basically a tie between H4831sc, IMR4831, H4350, RL17, and Magpro. I discounted RL17 due to cost and travel from my home, Magpro, & H4350 haven't been in stock since I can't remember when.
I'm leaning towards H4831sc due to it's well deserved reputation as a temperature stable powder that works VERY well with 180 grain bullets in the 300 wsm and is readily available OTC and usually in stock.
Yes I would like to hit a MV of 3000fps, but accuracy will always trump MV, and I would be happy with anything over 2900fps MV.
Thanks,
Art.
